Zambeef announces commissioning of State-of-the-Art Wheat Flour Mill Plant in Mpongwe

Aim is to help boost Zambia's food security


11 October 2024 Mpongwe, Zambia, Zambeef Products PLC (Zambeef) a leading agribusiness company in Zambia, is proud to announce the commissioning of its cutting-edge Wheat Flour Mill Plant at the Chambatata farm in Mpongwe. The new facility, will have the potential and capacity to process 50,000 metric tonnes of raw wheat per year. This marks a significant milestone in the country's journey towards increased food security and economic growth.

The inauguration ceremony was graced with the presence of Republican President Mr. Hakainde Hichilema, along with the Provincial Minister of the Copperbelt Province Hon. Elisha Matambo, and Minister of Agriculture Hon. Reuben Mtolo Phiri, and the Minister of Mines Hon. Paul C. Kabuswe, the chairperson for Mpongwe Town Council, Mr Emmanuel Masanga, senior Government officials, the acting British High Commissioner to Zambia, Sam Waldock. Also in attendance were our farmers, partners, traditional leaders, council chairpersons, as well as corporate executives from ZANACO Bank, Stanbic Bank, Standard Chartered Bank, CITIBANK and ABSA Bank.

The Republican President, Mr. Hakainde Hichilema, who commissioned the plant, acknowledged the importance of the investment and further commended Zambeef’s commitment to food security and the innovation, regarding the company’s efforts to bring through its winter maize. Mr. Hichilema expressed his satisfaction that this first-time practice at Mpongwe farm, has brought value to Zambia.

Faith Mukutu, CEO of Zambeef expressed her enthusiasm about the project, stating, "The commissioning of this new Wheat Flour Mill Plant is a vital step towards securing Zambia's food future. Not only does it double our processing capacity to 50,000 tonnes per year, but it also ensures an abundant supply of high-quality flour. We are making sure Zambia not only meets its domestic wheat needs but also taps into export opportunities in neighbouring markets."

The Minister of Agriculture Hon. Reuben Mtolo Phiri, commended Zambeef for its commitment to national development saying, "This investment by Zambeef is a testament to the private sector's crucial role in driving our country's agricultural transformation. The new Wheat Flour Mill Plant will significantly contribute to our food security goals, create jobs, and stimulate economic growth in the region."

The Mpongwe Wheat Mill Plant is part of Zambeef's broader US$100 million capacity expansion programme announced in June 2022. This strategic investment aims to optimise existing assets and build capacity for the future, delivering tangible benefits to the Zambian economy through job creation, increased tax revenue, and support for small-scale farmers and medium-sized enterprises.

The facility's state-of-the-art technology not only increases production capacity but also enhances the quality of flour produced. This development is expected to have a ripple effect on the local economy, creating both direct and indirect employment opportunities and supporting the growth of ancillary businesses.
