2024 was a quieter year for fragrance M&A following a 2023 that saw Kering acquire Creed and Advent acquire Parfums de Marly. Still, there were deals involving luxury niche brands BIBBI PARFUM, Vyrao, EX NIHILO PARIS and D.S. & DURGA, and many beauty investors remain bullish on dealmaking in the category for the rest of 2025. Last week, clean fragrance brand Lake and Skye was acquired by Tru Fragrance & Beauty. It was an honor to share the stage with such incredible beauty entrepreneurs, including Colette Laxton of The INKEY List | B Corp, Aaron Chatterley of indu and Katy Cottam of Luna Daily We had an insightful discussion about how European businesses can successfully expand into and navigate the US market. It’s especially important from an M&A perspective, as exposure to the US can significantly drive brand value at exit. Many non-US beauty brands enter the market through DTC channels and online partners like Amazon. However, given the US is a retail-focused market, it’s also beneficial to have a thoughtful and well-supported retail strategy. While Sephora has been the predominant path for brands to scale and build awareness, other retailers, such as Ulta, Target, and Bluemercury, are becoming increasingly relevant. Ealy-stage financial investors can also play a critical role in providing the necessary funding, resources, and expertise to help emerging brands scale. Some key takeaways: - Although the number of global beauty deals is down year to date, there is optimism for the sector with a more certain outlook going into 2025 - There is appetite from investors across all categories but particularly skincare, haircare, fragrance and colour cosmetics - A banker is more likely to be stuck by lightening than work on an IPO in the beauty sector Thank you Nader Naeymi-Rad Jane Carlson Claire McCormack and fantastic to connect in real life with so many fellow industry members. Hi When you’re busy and particularly when you work for yourself, it can be hard to invest time to sit and listen and learn but the last two days at Beauty Independent Dealmakers Summit was a brilliant opportunity to do just that. Amazing collection of talented people and curated industry knowledge expertly (and entertainingly) delivered by Nader Naeymi-Rad Claire McCormack and Jane Carlson. I loved the opening slide - Beauty has changed soooo much in the time I’ve been part of it from Age of Empires to Disrupters to now being the age of Champions where experience counts, Omni-channel is critical but be smart, don’t forget the opportunities of continental pharmacies, skincare is the hero category but don’t forget emerging specialists, and know that Biotech, Ai, and longevity are re-shaping the landscape to expand even further. But let’s not forget the Deals. beauty investment has buzzed as digital enabled founder access, Indie growth and new market awareness and consumer acquisition. In a constantly evolving world that continues to change fuelled by the new disruptor brands, but where heritage brands can also spike the multiplier. The @Creed £3.4bn sale is testament to the unicorn exit of a beautiful brand smartly managed. My own journey working directly with founders Jo Malone CBE Charlotte Tilbury Amy Gordinier Trinny Woodall Jamie Genevieve Dr. Tunç Tiryaki Aimee Connolly @denis siminoni Noelly Michoux in different forms shows the many stages of varied founder journies whose character, expertise and mission are integral to brand customer connection and success. Had the absolute pleasure today of sharing the stage with two incredibly talented founders, Katy Cottam of Luna Daily and Colette Laxton of The INKEY List | B Corp as well as Kelly McPhilliamy from Harris Williams We were discussing the hot topic of when and how to successfully launch a beauty brand into the US. I think the one common thread was the importance of picking the right retail partner for your brand. Oh, that and the fact that all 3 brands represented on stage were Unilever Ventures portfolio companies. 🚀 Huge credit has to be given to Nader Naeymi-Rad and the team at Beauty Independent Events for executing an outstanding and engaging 2 days. But do they work? Consumers want clinically-backed solutions over trendy claims. Credibility matters. 📊🔍 2️⃣ Prevention > Reaction Consumers are now thinking beyond traditional "anti-aging" products, looking instead to preventive health solutions that target root causes like inflammation – not just surface-level fixes. 🌱💪 3️⃣ Luxury vs. Mass-Market While many longveity solutions are currently higher priced (particularly due supply-side constraints and new ingredients), we believe that within 5-10 years, many prices will drop and tech-enabled platforms will continue to flourish, making these products and services more accessible. 💸💡 4️⃣ TikTok as an Educational Tool? Surprisingly, TikTok is becoming a strong platform for educational content (in addition to Youtube and podcasts), with an increasing 40+ audience.
