Circular Economy Applied to Electronic Printed Boards Based on Paper
About us
CircEl-Paper contributes to the aim to increase the amount of e-waste recycling in the EU by feeding it in the paper recycling process that is well established throughout the EU and accepted by the consumers. CircEl-Paper focusses on the widely used board technology (Printed Circuit Board PCB) and aims for replacing the fiber-composite core material FR4 by paper technology. Based on recently developed manufacturing processes of circuitry on paper, integration density has to be increased and sound evaluation of separation of used electronic materials in the recycling process has to be carried out. In order to transfer the PCB technology to circular economy each process step is scrutinized and alternative approaches are developed in order to increase the part of the materials that are recyclable, bio-based, or based on secondary raw materials, or at least harmless for the environment. Three different use cases in the field of medical application, logistics and consumer electronics, are realized demonstrating the performance of the paper-based PCB. The CircEl-Paper project is carried out by wellknown RTO, academic partners and manufacturing enterprises: Fraunhofer (project coordinator), Joanneum Research, RISE, ArjoWiggins, VFP, Malmö Mönsterkort, and G-INP.

Step by step towards sustainable electronics by means of paper-based PCB. Great!! 💯🌳
📢 Successful Trial for the CircelPaper Project: A Sustainable Alternative to PCBs! 🌍♻️ Exciting news from the CircelPaper project! 🚀 Gael Depres and Guillaume MEUNIER-CARUS from Fedrigoni Group and Denis Curtil and Arnel Brzovic from LGP2 have just completed the 4th of February a key pilot trial at Grenoble INP-Pagora in their mission to develop an innovative, paper-based material that could replace traditional printed circuit boards (PCBs). This marks a major step toward a more sustainable, circular electronics industry. 🛠️ What is CircelPaper? CircelPaper is an European project coordinated by Fraunhofer Institute for Silicate Research ISC with the objective to develop an eco-friendly alternative to conventional PCBs, which are typically made from fiberglass and epoxy resin. By leveraging cellulose-based materials, we aim to create a biodegradable, recyclable, and high-performance solution for electronic applications. 🔬 What did this trial achieve? ✅ Successful manufacturing at pilot trial of a new generation of paper substrate that will be impregnated with a bio-derivable resin ✅ Progress toward a scalable and sustainable production process 🌱 Why does this matter? PCBs are essential to modern electronics, but their production and disposal pose environmental challenges. With CircelPaper, we’re exploring a greener future, reducing electronic waste and moving toward circular manufacturing. This achievement is thanks to the dedication of our European project partners who are pushing the boundaries of innovation and sustainability. Next steps? Further testing, optimization, and scaling up production! 🚀 What are your thoughts on biodegradable electronics? Let’s discuss in the comments! 👇 #Circelpaper #Sustainability #GreenElectronics #paper #CircularEconomy #PCBReplacement

Sustainability is becoming increasingly important in electronics! Various sessions at MECAPLASTRONIC dealt intensively with the question of how electronics can be produced in a more environmentally friendly and sustainable way, bringing very different aspects into focus. The Circel-Paper Team was busy in Lyon last week and the Workshop, organized by Nadege Reverdy-Bruas, Gerhard Domann, Valerio Beni and the whole team was a great success! Good job for the CircEl-Paper-Team!
Steps toward sustainable Electronics Last week, the CircElPaper project organized a remarkable workshop on “Circular Materials for Sustainable Electronics” at the Megaplastronic Connection Event. In contributions and discussions, it quickly became clear that a paradigm shift is needed to make electronics more sustainable. Chloe Bois (PRINTABILITY & GRAPHIC COMMUNICATIONS INSTITUTE, Montreal, Canada) pointed out that sustainability for electronics can have very different priorities when geographical conditions are taken into account. Daniela Collin (Fraunhofer ISC), Gael Depres (Fedrigoni), Arnel Brzovic (Grenoble INP), Oliver Werzer and Sara Carniello (Joanneum Research) presented impressive successes from the CircEl-Paper project, which showed that high-performance electronics can also be possible - beyond the familiar materials and processes by using paper, printing and plating technologies, and adapted recycling technologies. Alternative approaches that emphasized additive manufacturing methods for printed circuit boards as a material-saving approach were presented by Lina Kadurea (CEA Liten). In a final panel discussion with Valerio Beni (RISE), Lara Jabbour (CEA Liten) and Nadege Reverdy-Bruas (Grenoble INP), the participants discussed about - new sustainable material approaches that enable better recyclability, - additive manufacturing processes that reduce the use of materials, These alternative approaches are feasible and technologically attractive to realise performant electronic circuits and ultimately increase the recycling rate of e-waste. However, this requires the electronics industry and consumers to be open to new technologies - and financial support for these alternative approaches in order to achieve the required level of technical maturity. Let's unify our ideas for #GreenElectronics!

Meet the CircEl-Paper Team in Lyon next week at MecaPlasTronic Connection and discuss the future of paperbased PCB!

Save the Date – Stakeholder Workshop at MécaPlasTronic, Lyon, November 26, 2024 How can circular materials meet the technical requirements of printed circuit boards? The EU-funded project CircEl-Paper is heading to close the loop for circular economy for reliable PCB: by using paper and paper recycling processes, by exploiting secondary raw materials, by using biobased materials, and by cost and material efficient printing processes. In its workshop event at MecaPlasTronic Connection 2024 in Lyon, the CircEl-Paper project team will present first results on new paper and ink formulations, on paper-based PCB manufacture and on the adaptation of paper recycling processing to recover PCB materials. In addition, well-known international experts will cover a range of further aspects on the road to sustainable electronics. Curious?
