The CITES-MIKE Programme regional training workshops bring together rangers and other #wildlife officials from different MIKE sites to share knowledge and best practices. These sessions focus on facilitating MIKE #data collection, fostering collaboration and ensuring a unified approach to wildlife #conservation across borders. While strengthening their individual capacities to monitor elephants, wildlife officials also build new communities of practice for stronger data-driven elephant conservation 🐘: https://lnkd.in/dqwUCvmB #CITESMIKE #DataForElephants #ElephantMonitoring #DataDrivenConservation European Union Southern African Wildlife College, Zimbabwe Parks & Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks)

Across Africa and Asia, the CITES-MIKE Programme conducts specialized on-site training sessions tailored to the needs of local law enforcement and wildlife management teams. These hands-on trainings equip staff at MIKE sites with essential skills in #data collection, patrolling, and effective response to poaching incidents. Empowering those on the ground enhances our collective ability to conserve elephants and combat illegal wildlife trade. 🐘 #CITESMIKE #DataForElephants #ElephantMonitoring #DataDrivenConservation European Union

The journey of CITES-MIKE Programme data doesn't end with collection and analysis. It informs global conservation decisions, made at meetings like the CITES Standing Committee and the Conference of the Parties (COP). 🌐 🤝 During these meetings CITES Parties use MIKE #data to shape policies and strategies to reduce illegal killings of elephant populations: Conference of the Parties | CITES 🐘 #CITESMIKE #DataForElephants #ElephantMonitoring #DataDrivenConservation European Union

Did you know that the Asian elephant is smaller than its cousin, the African elephant? 🐘 As the largest surviving land mammals in Asia, Asian elephants can weigh over five tonnes. The @CITES-MIKE Programme's network in Asia works across 30 sites in 13 range States. By monitoring populations, assessing threats and implementing conservation strategies , we aim to secure a sustainable future for Asian elephants. 🌏 Learn more about the CITES-MIKE Programme #Asia network by using our interactive map 🗺️ ➡️ https://lnkd.in/e4FnDmu9 Homepage #CITESMIKE #DataForElephants #ElephantMonitoring #DataDrivenConservation European Union

Today, we celebrate these magnificent creatures and the power of collaborative dedication to #elephantconservation! Based on the analysis published in 2022, elephant populations at MIKE sites across Africa and Asia are experiencing reduced poaching pressure—some of the lowest levels we've seen in years. Since 2002, the CITES-MIKE Programme has measured the Proportion of Illegally Killed Elephants (PIKE), which is the number of illegally killed elephants found divided by the total number of elephant carcasses encountered, aggregated by MIKE site and year. The news on reduced poaching pressure is a testament to the hard work of everyone involved, from rangers and local communities to international conservation bodies. The MIKE team is currently undertaking the analysis of the 2023 data, which will soon provide insights into whether or not the downward poaching trend continues. #CITESMIKE #DataForElephants #ElephantMonitoring #DataDrivenConservation European Union
