Join the Conversation. #WorldWildlifeDay is an annual celebration of wild animals and plants and is organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, CITES, in partnership with the UNDP, the Geneva Environment Network, the IFAW, Jackson Wild, and WILDLABS Community. At CITES MIKE Programme, we have seen firsthand how investing in law enforcement, transboundary collaborations, and strengthening ranger capacity can contribute to the conservation of elephants and other wildlife. This #WorldWildlifeDay, join the global discussion LIVE on YouTube! 📺 Watch here: https://lnkd.in/gQkSsViz 📅 Date: March 3, 2025 During the event, experts from around the world and International Geneva will share insights and experiences, highlight innovative financial mechanisms for wildlife conservation, and present actionable pathways to mobilize financial resources for investing in the future of our planet. #CITESMIKE #DataForElephants #ElephantMonitoring #DataDrivenConservation

Happy #WorldWildlifeDay!
Happy #WorldWildlifeDay! This year we're exploring a critical yet sometimes overlooked issue: #WildlifeConservationFinance. Wildlife is invaluable—yet its conservation and sustainable use require resources. From cacti and trees to big cats and corals, wildlife holds immense ecological, cultural and economic value. Innovative financial solutions are proving that conservation can be both effective for safeguarding our planet's biodiversity and beneficial for people living near and depending on wildlife. By investing in people and planet today, we can create a future where all living beings thrive together. #WWD2025 #CITES50

#DidYouKnow that an elephant eats between 150 to 300 kg of food daily! But their digestion is so inefficient that they process less than half of what they consume. This results in frequent defecation and lots of dung. Why does this matter? Elephant dung plays a key role in population surveys! Early in its establishment, the CITES MIKE Programme funded surveys and developed standards for Dung Count surveys. Now, this work is led by the IUCN 📖 Learn more about how dung is used for elephant surveys: https://lnkd.in/dBibupCe #CITESMIKE #DataForElephants #ElephantMonitoring #DataDrivenConservation

The CITES-MIKE Programme regional training workshops bring together rangers and other #wildlife officials from different MIKE sites to share knowledge and best practices. These sessions focus on facilitating MIKE #data collection, fostering collaboration and ensuring a unified approach to wildlife #conservation across borders. While strengthening their individual capacities to monitor elephants, wildlife officials also build new communities of practice for stronger data-driven elephant conservation 🐘: https://lnkd.in/dqwUCvmB #CITESMIKE #DataForElephants #ElephantMonitoring #DataDrivenConservation European Union Southern African Wildlife College, Zimbabwe Parks & Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks)

Across Africa and Asia, the CITES-MIKE Programme conducts specialized on-site training sessions tailored to the needs of local law enforcement and wildlife management teams. These hands-on trainings equip staff at MIKE sites with essential skills in #data collection, patrolling, and effective response to poaching incidents. Empowering those on the ground enhances our collective ability to conserve elephants and combat illegal wildlife trade. 🐘 #CITESMIKE #DataForElephants #ElephantMonitoring #DataDrivenConservation European Union

The journey of CITES-MIKE Programme data doesn't end with collection and analysis. It informs global conservation decisions, made at meetings like the CITES Standing Committee and the Conference of the Parties (COP). 🌐 🤝 During these meetings CITES Parties use MIKE #data to shape policies and strategies to reduce illegal killings of elephant populations: Conference of the Parties | CITES 🐘 #CITESMIKE #DataForElephants #ElephantMonitoring #DataDrivenConservation European Union
