The Cole Eye Institute is undergoing an exciting transformation, with the Jeffrey and Patricia Cole Pavilion building expansion that will more than double the size of our main campus location. This expansion will add 50 new exam rooms, a new surgical center with 10 operating rooms, a refractive surgery suite with 3 operating rooms, and a leading-edge educational space for our residents and fellows. Our team has grown exponentially, and we are seeing more patients than ever with over 360,000 outpatient visits, 19,500 surgeries, annually. Our patients also have access to over 50 clinical trials. In order to better identify potential targets for novel macular degeneration therapies, we need to better identify genes and pathways in diverse populations that had not been previously well studied. Cleveland Clinic Cole Eye Institute's Dr. Neal Peachy collaborated on an article in Nature Magazine Genetics, "Genome-wide association analyses identify distinct genetic architecture for age-related macular degeneration across ancestries", identifies major risk loci in African and Hispanic/Latino ancestry haplotypes. One week ago today, The Jeffrey and Patricia Cole Pavilion at Cleveland Clinic's Cole Eye Institute opened to patients. Cole Eye Institute is one of the world's most advanced eye centers and a leader in ophthalmologic research. We serve almost 400,000 patients every year, including 21,000 surgical cases. It is home to nearly 200 professional staff and trainees who diagnose, treat and investigate all eye conditions, including macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy. Take a look inside the Jeffrey and Patricia Cole Pavilion at Cleveland Clinic's Cole Eye Institute which opened to patients today. Cole Eye Institute is one of the world's most advanced eye centers and a leader in ophthalmologic research. The expansion, which includes 60 outpatient exams rooms and eight operating rooms, was made possible in part by a $31.5 million lead gift from Jeffrey A. Cole and his wife Patricia O’Brien Cole. Mr. Cole, along with his company Cole National, which was the world’s largest provider of commercial vision care services and based in Cleveland for 60 years, also contributed the lead gift that founded the Cole Eye Institute in 1999. “Having witnessed firsthand the profound difference that vision can make in a person's life, I truly understand its importance,” said Jeffrey Cole. “The opening of this new facility is a deeply meaningful moment for my family and me.
