Many impactful med tech innovations emerged from battlefield territories where specialties overlap. 💡 Yep, that place where surgery and GI intersect is all chum until it gets territorial. But it’s time to move beyond that nonsense. 🧯 This week I was invited to speak about the Future of Resection at the Cleveland Clinic in 1st Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection/Endorobotics Symposium to a room full of surgeons and gastroenterologists. We carve out early cancers (in the stomach, colon, esophagus, etc) in ways that are less invasive, preserve organs, and improve quality of life. 🙏 When discuss the future of medical innovation, I opted (instead of leaking Medtronic trade secrets) to encourage doctors to take the reins in driving the future innovation as active rather than passive adopters of technology. This requires a willingness to look beyond territorialism and collaborate/compromise with other specialties, be active in professional societies to redefine training, shape guidelines, be informed about how reimbursement is obtained and be vocal at pertinent meetings, advocate for relevant legislation, etc…and put aside ego, turf wars, and the rest of that BS. 💢 Honored once again to be invited to speak and teach in the hands-on lab in a course that embodies the spirit of working across siloes. Special thanks Amit Bhatt, I.
