About us

In 1922/23, in the years in which the national chemical industry was developing, the High School of Industrial Chemistry was established in Bologna, which will contribute to bringing the Italian chemical industry to the third place in the world in the 1960s and 1970s. The school's activities began thanks to the generous legacy of Luciano Toso Montanari. The first headquarters was built in 1935 next to the newly founded Engineering School, in viale Risorgimento 4; the second location next to this one after the Second World War. Today, the Department is part of the university complex of the Navile District, inaugurated in 2021. The “Toso Montanari” Department of Industrial Chemistry acts as a link between academic and industrial research, with the aim of strengthening interdisciplinary research aimed at training professionals for the social and industrial reality. It also intends to provide an incisive contribution to the cultural and professional training of students and to the scientific education of citizens, with a view to communication and exchange of knowledge. In the research and teaching guidelines, particular attention is given to the circular bioeconomy, the ecological transition, the study of innovative materials and sustainable development, to combat economic, social and territorial inequalities.
