When President Jimmy Carter left office, he quietly brought his leadership to the world of global health. For over fifty years, the former head of state traveled around the globe fighting to deliver basic healthcare and sanitation services to people in the most marginalized places. From Latin America to Africa, President Carter met with communities to find out their most dire health needs and lobbied with presidents, prime ministers, and even pharmaceutical companies to make healthcare more accessible. From negotiating ceasefires to helping nearly eradicate Guinea worm to making deals with pharmaceutical companies to donate drugs to fight river blindness, President Carter focused on specific solutions that each community needed to heal—and he never tied his name to any of these projects. Instead, he committed to uplifting the local leaders and community members who brought the work life. Foreign aid is a powerful tool in the fight against malnutrition. Since 2011, Feed the Future has helped prevent 2.2 million children from suffering developmental issues caused by malnutrition. The organization’s goal to reduce stunting by 20% by 2026 will require global commitment. #WorldStatisticsDay📊

Did you know that global life expectancy more than doubled in just 31 years? In 1990, it was 32 and by 2021, it rose all the way to 71.📊 On this #WorldStatisticsDay, we’re recognizing the crucial role foreign aid plays in global progress. According to the The Brookings Institution, foreign aid has contributed to some of the world’s greatest global health achievements: 📈Rates of extreme poverty dropped from 36% in 1990 to 9% in 2022. 📈Maternal mortality declined by 34% from 2000 to 2020. 📈Deaths from malaria in Africa were cut in half from 2000 to 2015. 📈HIV-free births increased by 5.5 million, and 25 million lives were saved through the U.S.-funded PEPFAR from 2003 to 2023. As we look to the future, continued investment in global health will be essential to sustain and build on this progress.

Every child deserves a chance at a bright future, and that starts with ensuring they receive the healthcare and nutrition they need.
