“You can’t manage what you can’t monitor.” - Andy Jarvis, Director of Future of Food, Bezos Earth Fund. Grasslands, including open grasslands, grassy shrublands and savannas, are among the most vital ecosystems on Earth, covering roughly 40% of its land surface. They sustain over 1 billion people, provide essential ecosystem services, and store critical carbon stocks. Yet, only 10% are protected, leaving many at risk of degradation and conversion to other land uses. The Global Pasture Watch research consortium, convened by Land & Carbon Lab, is tackling these challenges by developing groundbreaking global data to monitor grassland extent, condition, and management. 🌍 #ICYMI Emerging Issues and Technologies in Forest Restoration 🌱 The latest data from Global Forest Watch paints a troubling picture: forest fires are becoming more widespread, burning at least twice as much tree cover today as they did just two decades ago. At an event co-hosted by the Environmental Defense Fund, UNCCD/G20 Global Land Initiative, and World Resources Institute at #UNCCDCOP16, experts came together to address the devastating impact of uncontrolled forest fires on biodiversity, carbon emissions, air quality, and overall forest health. The discussions also highlighted the innovative technologies and strategies being deployed to restore forests at scale. Key Takeaways: 👉🏾 Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities: Their knowledge and practices are essential for large-scale forest restoration. The Forest Data Partnership has joined forces with The Linux Foundation’s AgStack project to develop critical building blocks for digital public infrastructure that will help accelerate the transition to deforestation-free value chains and support efforts from smallholder farmers and companies to meet the #EUDR requirements. 🌳   This project will deliver open-source solutions that enable interoperability and equitable access to digital services, unlocking innovation and value at scale. We are thrilled to share the fifth installment of our #GFW10 Voices of Global Forest Watch series, featuring Muhammad Ichwan, National Executive Director of Indonesia’s Forestry Independent Monitoring Network (JPIK). 🛰 When we sat down with Ichwan, he shared how JPIK used GFW data to uncover illegal logging activities in Central Kalimantan in December 2022.
