The 20th International Roundtable for Community Paramedicine (IRCP) is underway in Quebec City. Dr Peter O'Meara is leading a discussion panel for colleges of paramedicine.
We are deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of Al Benney, a beloved educator at Hennepin Technical College. Al was a pioneering figure in the field of Community Paramedic education, having taught more Community Paramedics than anyone else. His dedication to healthcare education has left an indelible mark on countless lives. His commitment, passion, and wisdom have not only shaped the future of emergency medical services but also ensured that communities across the country have skilled, compassionate care available when needed most. We have lost a remarkable educator and an inspiring colleague. Let us honor Al's legacy by continuing to strive for excellence in the work he loved so much. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to learn from him. Rest in peace, Al. Your impact will not be forgotten.
Congratulations to the Province of Prince Edward Island residents! It gives me great pleasure to share that the work we have embarked on to establish a College of Paramedicine of PEI is coming to fruition. This has been a long process, pre-dating my arrival on PEI, when the EMT Act was repealed. That act has now been proclaimed and further details are available in the Royal Gazette including the new regulations starting on page 384 (32 of 53). Those regulations will be posted on the Government's Statues & Regulations page in the coming days: https://lnkd.in/ePBgjCAC The opportunity to contribute to the modernization of paramedic services on PEI was one of the reasons that I chose this job. Inevitably there will be (and have been) some bumps along the way and I remain cautiously optimistic about the transition that this regulatory change signals. I describe paramedicine as the mobile, on-demand, access to care specialty with a focus on patient safety across the continuum of care. Our new regulations are a better reflection of the profession that will maintain public safety for a practice environment that is typically highly dynamic. It is somewhat bittersweet that my time as Provincial Coordinator for the EMS Board of PEI is coming to an end. My regulatory work continues, solely focused on service delivery under the Ambulance Services Act. I look forward to continuing the work of modernizing service delivery for a profession that is now better suited to bring care to patients (and patients to care when necessary).
