Oh Deer! Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) is a growing threat to some species of Cervidae—animals such as deer, elk, and moose. As of August 2024, the disease has been reported in 35 U.S. states and five Canadian provinces. The effects of this fatal disease extend beyond the death of wildlife—including negative impacts on ecosystems, economic costs for cervid-reliant industries, and the loss of cultural traditions tied to cervid hunting. Our new report details on how CWD spreads, its current distribution, and the effectiveness of existing diagnostic, prevention, and control methods. This report will assist the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) in prioritizing research and developing future CWD management strategies. In Alaska, #reindeer are much more real than the fantasy animals that pull Santa’s sleigh. Reindeer provide food security and economic opportunities for the Alaskan Native community. On the latest episode of #TheOngoingTransformation, University of Alaska Fairbanks’ Jacqueline Hrabok and Bonnie Suaŋa Scheele talk with host Lisa Margonelli about how reindeer herding requires a deep understanding of the needs of Indigenous communities and academic science—as well as how to navigate and influence local, state, and federal policies.
