Headquartered at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the QSC is one of five National Quantum Information Science Research Centers founded by the Department of Energy. This five-year, $115 million effort combines resources and expertise from four national laboratories, nine universities, and three industry partners. The QSC's research revolves around three focus areas: Quantum Materials Discovery and Design, Quantum Algorithms and Simulation, and Quantum Devices and Sensors for Discovery Science. QSC members also lead workforce development events, including an annual summer school, to support students, postdoctoral researchers, and early-career scientists.

Through the Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) Program, Joyce Christiansen-Salameh, a third-year mechanical engineering PhD student at Cornell University, will be joining Fermilab in January to assist with its QSC-funded Quantum Underground Instrumentation Experimental Testbed, or QUIET. Fermilab recently opened the doors to the underground lab, which will allow scientists to study the performance of qubits isolated from cosmic radiation, thus advancing quantum sensing and computing. Joyce was selected for this competitive award by proposing an interesting synthesis of materials and quantum science to address the problem of radiation incident on superconducting quantum chips, which she will test over the course of the award period. Her lab mentor will be Dr. Daniel Baxter of the QSC, who leads the QUIET program. Through world-class training and access to state-of-the-art facilities and resources at DOE National Laboratories, SCGSR prepares graduate students to enter jobs of critical importance to the DOE mission and secures our national position at the forefront of discovery and innovation.
A Fermilab Quantum Science Center program reached a major milestone: after three-plus years designing, building and commissioning the QUIET underground testbed, superconducting qubits have successfully been deployed for the first time. This marks the transition from infrastructure development to unique scientific studies using QUIET over the next few years.
