This month, Rijkswaterstaat hosted the second International Conference on Emission Free Construction Sites of the Leap to Zero-network. Public infrastructure owners from Europe and abroad convened with OEMs, contractors, international organizations and other stakeholders to discuss the transition towards a zero emission future in the construction sector at an international level. Some key takeaways of the conference: - Transitions can go surprisingly fast. We have seen the examples, for instance in the city bus industry. - Collaboration across the value chain (contractors, manufacturers, infrastructure owners and policy makers) is crucial to set the wheels of change in motion. - Demand in projects is essential to offer the market a reliable, stable growth path. - In many countries, national regulation that brings clarity for the sector is a goal for the long term. To keep stakeholders motivated, short term focus should be on the zero emission ambitions of local or regional authorities. - Standardization of zero emission equipment will significantly improve the operation of electric machinery. Four global manufacturers agreed to start discussions on common efforts to reach standardization. We are also happy to share that a small working group has been set up to work on a governance model for the Leap to Zero-network, to ensure future activities and events of the network. International cooperation and information exchange is the key to a successful transition. Specials thanks to Alexander Neumann, Hans Bekkers, Tobias van Oord, Tobias Stöcker, Dominique CHEVILLARD, Philip Mortensen, Arjan Walinga, Nikki Nicolai, Han Rekers, Gerard van der Veer, Patrick Schothuis, Sachio Kunisawa (and her colleagues from Komatsu), Marieke Donkervoort and Arjen Ros for sharing their inspiring contributions, and to Anky van Wijchen, Arjen van den Ouden and Gerben van den Berg for organizing the conference field trip to Dike Reinforcement project Tiel-Waardenburg and Charging Station Watthub.

Something special happens in the Netherlands every year towards the end of September. Hundreds of bird species descend from Scandinavia on the IJsselmeer, Wadden and Delta areas. From relaxing brent geese to greedy wigeons: the Netherlands is a paradise for aquatic birds. Check out why: https://lnkd.in/efaWgQTT

The storm and high water season started on 1 October 2024. Rijkswaterstaat is making sure that the Netherlands is well protected against high water. We do this by testing storm surge barriers, carrying out constant coastal maintenance and ensuring that flood defences are in good condition. A large proportion of the Netherlands is below sea level, which makes us vulnerable. Safety first: check out how we do this ➡ https://lnkd.in/eR5Uf4mT

Some countries in Southeast Asia are turning to the Netherlands for ways to tackle rising tides and floods stemming from climate change. This exchange of knowledge works both ways, as Channel News Asia showed in a video report. Rijkswaterstaat and Deltares are involved. Are you also interested in working together? The water sector is fragile. Digitisation is creating a new, increased risk in operational technology. Risk awareness of digital threats in operational technology is relatively low, while the impact of a cyber-attack on operational technology is potentially immense. To deal with this fragility, ATHENA was created. ATHENA aims to uptake innovative solutions through co-creation, implementation and embedding of targeted competence upskilling modules. Want to know more about ATHENA, and curious about the origin of the name of the project? Read more here >> https://lnkd.in/eaSgGJ-Y #rijkswaterstaat #digitalisation #infrastructure

Transforming Road Traffic Management in the Netherlands 🚗 The world of road-traffic management is evolving. Look at the technological and social developments that are taking place around you, in our cars and in the infrastructure, for instance. Rijkswaterstaat's response to this is the CHARM program. CHARM aims to revolutionise traffic management with the implementation of a new IT platform, DYNAC. This initiative enhances safety and efficiency on Dutch roads by modernising traffic control systems across the country. Implemented in phases, CHARM ensures safe and smoothly flowing road traffic: now and in the future. Already active in several control centres, this system is crucial for maintaining and upgrading our road network efficiently. NAPSEA: Tackling nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) pollution from source to sea 🌊 Rijkswaterstaat is proud to be part of the NAPSEA project, addressing nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) pollution to safeguard our inland and coastal waters. This EU Horizon-funded initiative focuses on governance, pathways, and ecosystem health. By evaluating nutrient sources and reduction measures, NAPSEA aims to implement sustainable solutions for cleaner, healthier waters. In the European sand belt, agricultural soils face significant challenges including droughts and acidification, exacerbated by climate change. These issues have profound implications for current agricultural practices and future sustainability. To address these challenges, Rijkswaterstaat and Provincie Gelderland are collaborating on the LIFE CO2SAND project. This initiative aims to mitigate soil degradation by strategically applying a thin layer of clay to increase the lutum content in sandy soils to 8%. The project's objective is to treat 700 hectares of agricultural land by 2027, effectively enhancing soil resilience and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. How do they plan on doing this?
