Forgot to buy a Father's Day gift? Here are a few book recommendations for every type of dad: 🎁 ASCENSION by Nicholas Binge: An enormous snow-covered mountain has appeared in the Pacific Ocean. No one knows when exactly it showed up or how to explain its existence. A group of scientists set out to see if they’ve stumbled upon the greatest scientific discovery known to man or the seeds of their own demise. 🎁 WHAT IF? 2 by Randall Munroe: Is your dad planning to ride a fire pole from the moon back to Earth? Want to know what would happen if he rode a helicopter blade, built a billion-story building, made a lava lamp out of lava, or jumped on a geyser as it erupted? Randall Munroe has all the answers for him. 🎁 AMERICAN FLANNEL by Steven Kurutz: Journalist Steven Kurutz uses American Giant’s quest to build a 100% made-in-USA flannel shirt from the ground up to spotlight the small but passionate community of brands and makers (including one dubbed “the sock queen of Alabama”) dedicated to keeping the American garment industry alive. 🎁 WHITE HOLES by Carlo Rovelli: If your dad took you to NASA for a family vacation, then this is the book for him. Beloved physicist, Carlo Rovelli, will take him into the heart of a black hole in a book that says as much about imagination and exploration as it does about physics. 🎁 THE HEAVEN & EARTH GROCERY STORE by James McBride: Two communities on the outside of a Pittsburgh neighborhood—one comprised of African Americans, the other of Jewish immigrants—become intertwined as the discovery of a dead body brings up long-held secrets. This will definitely make your dad cry! #FathersDay #GiftIdeas #RiverheadBooks #Nonfiction #Fiction #Dad #BookRecommendations #FathersDayGifts

There was a man outside with a white cane, touching it against the wall of the shop. He was visually impaired, trying to find his way. Emma placed her hand on his shoulder. He gave her a hug. Then she held his hand and walked him into the bakery. I was struck by the beauty of this small moment. Here’s a woman whose job it is to take people’s orders at a fancy French bakery, where people pay $5 for a croissant. It’s beautiful and posh and delicious and popular. There’s no need for her to exude kindness to everyone who comes in. That’s certainly not the norm in New York City. We typically avoid eye contact and ignore one another. And yet, here’s a woman who is working busily, serving other people, meeting their demands—and doing it all with a smile. I watch her work for ten minutes and I’m exhausted, but she shows no sign of slowing down. Here’s what I’m thinking about. Most of us aren’t living this way. We’re working hard and carrying a lot constantly, but our outlooks aren’t so pristine. Who among us takes the time to learn the names of strangers? Do we go out of our way to help other people, not expecting anything in return? https://lnkd.in/ggpz7AD9
