In today’s world, the effects of climate change extend far beyond environmental impact—they are deeply affecting the mental health of our younger generations. According to the book "Climate Change and Youth: Turning Grief and Anxiety into Activism" by Linda Goldman, 52% of teenagers report feeling angry about climate change, with only 29% feeling optimistic about the future. This widespread "eco-anxiety" is leading to significant levels of stress, grief, and even despair among young people. Generation Z, representing about 32% of the global population, is particularly vulnerable. These digital natives are highly aware of the environmental crises we face, and they are not sitting idly by. Instead, they are transforming their anxiety and grief into powerful activism. From global climate strikes that have mobilized millions to grassroots environmental projects, these young activists are leading the charge for change. Their activism not only drives progress but also offers them a sense of agency and hope. As adults, educators, and professionals, it's crucial that we support these efforts. By fostering open conversations, providing accurate information, and encouraging proactive steps, we can help turn their anxiety into action and their grief into resilience. About us
Climate anxiety is a significant issue affecting today's youth. In these times, it's crucial to create spaces for discussions about the climate crisis, its impact, and the necessary actions to address it. While individual efforts alone won't resolve the climate crisis, coming together as a community allows us to find solace in shared experiences, learn from diverse perspectives, and envision the world we aspire to create. SLO Climate Summit serves as a community-organized space where people can engage in open conversations about the climate crisis, including the emotional responses it elicits. We envision this as an event to bring together students for an afternoon of inspirational speakers, safe-space discussions, and opportunities to connect with clubs and organizations focused on climate action.
