This year, four oil tankers, each having recently called at a #Russian port, suffered explosions—three in the Mediterranean and one in the Baltic. At this time, it is unclear who or what was responsible for the explosions. Analysts suggest that evidence points to human rather than accidental causes. Over the weekend of the 15th of February, the 245m Maltese-flagged tanker SEAJEWEL (IMO 9388807) suffered an #explosion while at anchor off Savona, Italy. Still capable of operating, she departed Savona on the 21st of February and made her way to Agios Georgios, an island approximately 50km south of Athens. She had called in at #Novorossiysk, Russia, on the 16th of January. It was reported that the month before, the SEACHARM (IMO 9773765), a 237m Marshall Island-flagged #tanker operating under the same owner as the SEAJEWEL, experienced an explosion while transiting towards Ceyhan, Turkey. She had last called at Novorossiysk, Russia, on the 12th of December 2024, where she was imaged. The KOALA (IMO 9234642), a 274m tanker flagged in Antigua and Barbuda, arrived at the Russian #oil port Ust-Luga on the 6th of February and experienced a significant blast while docked on the 9th of February. The explosion has been classified as a “man-made incident.” The GRACE FERRUM (IMO 9667928), a 183m tanker flagged in Liberia, departed Ust-Luga, Russia, on the 12th of January and suffered an explosion weeks later upon arriving in Libyan waters. Currently, the vessel remains off the coast of Tripoli, Libya, where she arrived on the 28th of January. Having read the Insurance Journal’s excellent article on the four vessels (https://hubs.li/Q038qZBJ0), we at SynMax decided to see what our #maritime domain awareness platform, Theia, had captured of the vessels, imaged. In addition to real-time #AIS data, Theia ingests 25 million km2 of satellite imagery daily—more than any other intelligence provider. Extensive imagery archives mean vessel behavior can be viewed retrospectively, allowing for in-depth analysis after the event. Theia’s advanced AI automatically identifies, attributes, and tracks tens of thousands of vessels across oceans, regardless of AIS status—redefining actionable #intelligence at scale.
