Susana Ng recently shared with us some of the wonderful programs being run by City of Sydney International Student Ambassadors! These look fantastic, and great opportunities to learn and connect. And they're free! The more work Welcoming Universities does around the international student experience, the more it becomes clear that in-person chances to learn, connect, build networks and friendships are absolutely key to students having positive experiences studying in Australia. Well done to the City of Sydney International Student Ambassadors for their work in hosting these important events. Here are the details: https://lnkd.in/gzgPaBJq and https://lnkd.in/gHhpBts4
Welcoming Universities
Higher Education
A network to inspire & support Australian universities to develop a culture & practice of welcome, inclusion & belonging
About us
A network to inspire and support Australian universities to develop a culture and practice of welcome, inclusion and belonging within their institutions, in the community, and across the higher education sector. Numerous Australian Universities are at the leading edge of research, debate and thought leadership in areas such as population, migration, social cohesion, economic participation, diversity, and inclusion. However, as with any large and complex institution, Universities can lack the frameworks and resources to apply such knowledge and academic rigour to internal practice. Welcoming Universities will support higher education institutions to create a sense of belonging for all their stakeholders (including staff, students, and communities of practice). The initiative will build on the success and learnings of Welcoming Cities and enable Universities to benchmark their cultural diversity and inclusion practices across their entire operations. Welcoming Universities will become providers of choice to both domestic and international students. This model brings rigour to cultural diversity and inclusion, like existing accreditations for areas of diversity, such as gender1. Many Universities are required, or encouraged, by State Governments2 to embed essential cultural diversity and inclusion principles into their core business. Welcoming Universities will assist in planning, benchmarking, and improving these principles and practices by developing and implementing the Welcoming Universities Standard.

It's taken a little while for us to do the follow up from the Welcoming Universities Summit which was held on the 22nd of October. But this week we have released the Summit summary, and a blog post about this inaugural event. It was a wonderful first summit, and we are already starting to think and plan what the 2025 Summit will look like... What a brilliant program from Welcoming Universities member institution UNSW supporting international students to have positive, safe swimming experiences while studying in Australia. And wonderful to see their work at expanding this to other universities as well as migrant and community groups in NSW. This is critical work for safety and wellbeing, but it is also an example of active welcoming - this grants access and supports new arrival community members to experience a key part of living in Australia - swimming in the ocean!
💬 “…it’s also about more than just swimming – it’s an opportunity to connect with an important part of Australian culture and feel a sense of belonging in our beautiful coastal environment.” A beach safety program developed by UNSW in partnership with Surf Life Saving NSW and Coogee Surf Life Saving Club will be made available across NSW to other universities, as well as migrant and community groups who want to help people in their community stay safe in the water. 🌊 The program is designed to help participants build beach safety skills and confidence so they can enjoy Australia’s beaches safely. 🎤🔥 Once again, Kathomi Gatwiri PhD has shared with an incredibly captive audience “what it means to thrive in a white space in a body like mine….What it means to thrive when the body you carry is not the body they meant when it comes to thriving in universities”. This morning at the Welcoming Universities Summit, we learnt about the “concrete ceiling” - the compounded challenges of racial and gender discrimination that Black women face With a “glass ceiling”, at least you can see what opportunities are above you, with a concrete ceiling it’s hidden away. Kathomi finished her powerful presentation with stories of dignity that act as a poignant reminder that “relationships are the heart of decolonisation and dignifying relationships save lives.” The framework of racial dignity that Associate Professor Kathomi Gatwiri is developing (and shared with attendees today) is such a generous and transformative opportunity for change. 🎤 🔥 #StrongerTogether #WelcomingUniversities

Aunty Gallindurra, or Aunty Glendra Stubbs, Elder-in-Residence at University of Technology Sydney, shared an Acknowledgement to Country to kick of the Welcoming Universities summit with a timely reminder that universities haven’t always been welcoming, particularly to First Nations communities, and have a lot of work to do. In her early years, she learnt a lot from her family and community about social justice and inclusion and equity - and what not to put up with! Gallindurra means “peaceful waters”. As she says, “I am peaceful waters until there’s no social justice, and then I become a raging torrent”. What an excellent way to start a day where together we’re advancing welcoming, inclusion and belonging in Australian universities. #SayWelcome #WelcomingUniversities
