Twenty years after the adoption of the Voluntary Guidelines on the Right to Food, the global food situation presents a disturbing picture: 🍞 More food is being produced worldwide than ever before. 🌍 At the same time, 282 million people suffer from acute hunger. Low-income countries, in particular, are facing even greater challenges due to mutually reinforcing crises, above all armed conflicts, the climate crisis, the loss of soil fertility and biodiversity. People who are already living in poverty are experiencing the consequences disproportionately. 📉 Nevertheless, progress is being made. Numerous countries have incorporated the Right to Food into their laws and programs, and the guidelines have become the basis for other international legal instruments. 📜 🏛️ Governments must prioritize the Right to Food with inclusive, participatory food policies at all levels. 🏭 Private sector actors must respect human rights throughout the food chain to support sustainable food system transformation. With only 6️⃣ years left to meet the SDG 2 target of "Zero Hunger", States and multilateral actors must once again prioritize the Right to Food and pursue a determined agenda for its implementation. The Right to Food must be respected and protected at all costs! #RightToFood #ZeroHunger #SDG #FoodSystems

Why we look to the G20 summit with hope 🌍🌟 This year's summit is especially significant as it marks the launch of the 'Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty'. Marlehn Thieme, President of Welthungerhilfe, emphasizes: "It is the most ambitious initiative to end hunger in a long time. A powerful 'Global Alliance' must also put more emphasis on the human right to adequate food, as one in eleven people still suffers from chronic hunger." 💬 📢 Our appeal to the global leaders attending the summit: Ensure stronger participation of civil society from the Global South in the planning of future summits! 🫱🏽🫲🏿 Together, we can achieve #ZeroHunger! 💪 #G20 #RightToFood #SDG2 G20 Brasil 2024

The climate crisis is a trending topic during COP29 Azerbaijan, and rightfully so. ❗ For a lot of people in South Sudan, it is not a passing trend but a daily reality that requires constant adjusting. We hear about it first-hand from the communities we work with. Farmers 👨🌾 👩🌾 can no longer rely on rain patterns to decide when and what to plant, as these are now unpredictable. Instead, they are employing new farming techniques, protecting their lands and opting for cultivations that resist better to weather changes. For a country where over 80% of people rely on farming, such climate-resilient strategies are essential. As we keep guiding farmers with training and tailored support, we are also leading Anticipatory Action efforts in collaboration with our partners Hope Agency For Relief And Development in Norther Bahr el Ghazal and Hope Restoration S.s in Unity. This enables communities to: 🔎 Identify and monitor the most pressing climate risks they are exposed to. 📄 Plan early actions to respond to the risks before they escalate. We can do more to protect lives and secure livelihoods for South Sudan’s most vulnerable populations. As climate challenges keep growing, Anticipatory Action and climate-resilient strategies are a sustainable and dignified way forward. Let’s continue driving awareness and action to empower those who are already on the front lines of this crisis. #COP29 #ClimateAction #ClimateResilience #AnticipatoryAction

📢 Our COP29 Demands! Currently, the 29th UN Climate Change Conference COP29 Azerbaijan is taking place in Baku. 🌐 We want to use this occasion to highlight the urgent state of global development and climate financing, especially in light of stagnant public finances. The countries negotiating at COP29 have a responsibility to intensify their national climate efforts and increase financial support to combat poverty and hunger! 🌱💸 At COP29, we are calling for three key actions: 1️⃣ Climate Justice through a New Global Goal (NCQG): This goal must prioritize the needs of low-income countries, which require billions of USD annually to adapt to climate impacts. 2️⃣ Support for Sustainable Food Systems: COP29 should commit to supporting sustainable initiatives like the Food Security Standard (FSS) and promoting food systems that both protect the environment and ensure food security. 3️⃣ Full Implementation of the Loss and Damage Fund: The fund must be fully operationalized to meet the urgent needs of the most affected countries. Climate change poses a complex, multi-layered threat to food security. 🌡️ Extreme weather events and rising temperatures are causing devastating crop losses year after year. The time to act is now! Climate protection requires governments to uphold the right to food through meaningful action. 💪 #COP29 #FoodSystems #GreenerTogether #ClimateProtection #ZeroHunger

Many of us in the United States are still processing the outcome of the presidential election—and the implications for development. As we look ahead, the future of climate action remains uncertain. However, Welthungerhilfe (WHH) remains steadfast in our commitment to sustainable development and combating the severe impacts of climate change on vulnerable communities. This month, WHH will be hosting two side events at the UN Climate Change Conference #COP29, focused on highlighting the interconnectedness of hunger and climate change, and the innovative solutions required to support those most affected. 🌱 At WHH, we believe that climate resilience is crucial to achieving a world without hunger, and by focusing on soil health and forgotten foods, we’re excited to join global leaders, advocates, and organizations in pushing forward the climate agenda. Join us at COP 29, and let’s make progress on climate action that includes everyone, everywhere. 🔗 Read more about our upcoming events in link in comments. #ClimateAction #COP29 #ZeroHunger #Welthungerhilfe #ClimateJustice

🇺🇸 Today, on Election Day in the United States, we are reminded of the power and responsibility that democratic nations hold—not just domestically but on the global stage. The choices made by institutions and individuals have profound ripple effects worldwide, particularly for those in vulnerable regions. ⛑️ As we witness the unfolding humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, highlighted in our recent press release, the urgency of global solidarity and action is clear. With nearly 80% of Gaza’s population already in need of humanitarian assistance, Welthungerhilfe (WHH) is on the ground, striving to meet the needs of communities under severe strain. (🔗 Link to press release in comments.) 🤲 But this work requires allies. As you cast your vote and consider the importance of global humanitarian efforts, we encourage reflection on how we can extend the reach of compassion and practical support to those in dire need. Together, we can amplify efforts to alleviate hunger, provide essential resources, and support resilience in the hardest-hit regions. Let’s make a difference—here at home and beyond. 🌍 #ElectionDay #HumanitarianAid #Welthungerhilfe #GlobalSolidarity

Attended the annual gathering in Iowa for the World Food Prize and the “Borlaug Dialogue,” a three-day conference with world leaders and top experts in development, agriculture, economic policy, resource management and nutrition – all inspired by the historic legacy of Norman Borlaug and the achievements of the World Food Prize Laureates in fighting global hunger. This year, the 2024 World Food Prize honors Dr. Cary Fowler and Dr. Geoffrey Hawtin. Their legacy includes building and supporting a global system of genebanks for the conservation of crop diversity, including the Svalbard Global Seed Vault in Norway, which safeguards duplicates of 1,301,397 seed samples from around the world. More recently, Dr. Fowler’s work continues through U.S. Department of State as a pioneer of the Vision for Adapted Crops and Soils (VACS) which is bringing governments and the private sector together to develop climate-adapted nutritious crop varieties and building, healthy fertile soils. The changing climate requires every nation to catalogue and store seeds of all types. Crop biodiversity is necessary for nutrition security and human survival. WHH works to promote seed banking and crop diversity, and as a VACS Champion we aim to include this as a part of our food systems transformation in Africa and around the world. #FoodPrize24 #VACS

The GHI 2024 shows that the progress against hunger is falling short. 📉 42 countries have alarming or serious levels of hunger. After decades of significant progress in the fight against hunger, development has entered a phase of stagnation. ⚠️ In 2️⃣2️⃣ countries with moderate, serious, or alarming 2024 GHI scores, hunger has increased since 2016. In 2️⃣0️⃣ countries with moderate, serious, or alarming GHI scores, progress has largely stalled. At the current pace, at least 6️⃣4️⃣ countries will not reach low hunger—much less #ZeroHunger—by 2030. However, examples of progress and hope exist even amid crises and worrying trends. In contrast to the global trend, these five countries have reduced their GHI scores by more than 5 points compared with their 2016 GHI scores: 🇧🇩 Bangladesh 🇲🇿 Mozambique 🇳🇵 Nepal 🇸🇴 Somalia 🇹🇬 Togo Realizing the right to food is both possible and essential. Now more than ever, the world must reverse the alarming trends pushing hunger upward and accelerate progress toward building equitable, nutritious, and resilient food systems, even within the context of a changing climate 🌡️ and turbulent geopolitics 🌍. The good news is that gender justice—equity between people in all spheres of life—holds the promise of transformative change. 💪 When decision-making about sustainable land management, livelihood diversification, and education is inclusive and equitable, households and communities become more resilient to a changing climate and improve their food and nutrition security. 🚀 #GHI2024 #GlobalHungerIndex #FoodSecurity #GenderJustice
