A credit card is a payment instrument that you can use to purchase goods and services and pay for them at a later date. Credit cards come in multiple forms such as plastic, metal and digital. The payment date is usually 15-25 days after the bill is generated. If you pay the entire amount by the due date, you don’t need to pay any interest charges on the amount.
A credit card lets you avail an interest free credit period and enjoy benefits such as reward points, discounts, offers, complimentary movie tickets, lounge access and more. The exact benefits depend on the type of credit card you have and the card issuer’s policies.
A credit limit is the maximum amount you can spend using your credit card. It is determined by the card issuer based on various factors such as your credit score, monthly income, existing debts, payment history, etc. In the case of FD backed credit cards, you can get a credit limit equal to your FD amount.
Some credit card issuers allow cash withdrawals at domestic and/or international ATMs. However, the withdrawal limit is a small percentage of your overall credit limit. Cash withdrawals using credit cards can be a costly deal as they come with a cash advance fee, finance charges and interest charges from the day of withdrawal.
When you spend using credit cards you can earn points on the transactions you make. These reward points can be collected and redeemed for various things such as cashback, gift vouchers, paying for recent transactions, etc. The transactions eligible for earning reward points and benefits of reward points depend on your card issuer’s policies.
There are quite a few lifetime free credit cards available in the market. Some credit cards charge an annual fee but waive it off if you achieve a certain predetermined spending milestone. Do check your card issuer’s policies for exact details.
