US stocks rebounded on Friday as investors neared the end of a holiday-shortened week that also rang in a new year, which brought with it expectations of additional Federal Reserve rate cuts and looser regulatory policies from the incoming administration.

A broad rally sent all three major U.S. stock indexes to a higher close, with megacap growth companies, such as Tesla and Nvidia providing much of the muscle to the upside and putting the tech-heavy Nasdaq out front.

Even so, all three indexes posted modest declines for the week, with the S&amp;P 500 logging its third weekly loss in four.

A multi-session selloff put a dour cap on what was a banner year for the equities market, as continued momentum of artificial intelligence technology and the U.S. Federal Reserve's first policy rate cuts in three-and-a-half years helped fuel double-digit gains in 2024.

"After the late-in-the-year weakness, and a very oversold market, we finally saw some buyers step in," said Ryan Detrick, chief market strategist at Carson Group in Omaha. "Obviously the past week-and-a-half has been disappointing for the bulls, but volume has been light and there hasn't been a lot of news."

"Let's just remember, starting next week, on Monday, that's when a lot of the big money managers come back to the desk," Detrick added. "We'll see if this bullish trend can continue."

On the economic front, the Institute for Supply Management's (ISM) purchasing managers' index (PMI) surprised to the upside by gaining 0.9 point to 49.3, its highest reading since March, nudging ever closer to expansion territory.

A run of fairly robust economic data has called into question the need for additional interest rate cuts from the Fed in the near term due to the possibility of re-igniting inflationary pressures.

Richmond Fed President Thomas Barkin said the U.S. 2025 economic outlook was positive, despite uncertainty about the impact of trade and other policies that may be pursued by the incoming Trump administration.

The newly elected Congress convened for its first session on Friday, and U.S. President-elect Donald Trump is expected to take the oath of office on Jan. 20.

While Trump's proposals - which include cutting corporate taxes, easing regulations and imposing tariffs - could boost corporate profits and energize the economy, but they also run the risk of placing upward pressure on inflation.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 339.86 points, or 0.80%, to 42,732.13, the S&amp;P 500 gained 73.92 points, or 1.26%, to 5,942.47 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 340.88 points, or 1.77%, to 19,621.68.

"Today feels like there is quite a bit of profit-taking across the board," said Michael Reynolds, vice president of investment strategy at Glenmede.

"We are more than two years into a pretty strong bull market ... so it's really not surprising to see some people taking their profits and rebalancing their portfolios ahead of the new year."

Highlighting the profit-taking theme, the 45 top performers year-to-date on the S&amp;P 500 all finished lower on Friday.

The sell-off thwarted the seasonal Santa Claus rally, in which stocks traditionally rise during the last five sessions of December and the first two of January. Since 1969, the S&amp;P 500 has climbed 1.3% on average, according to the Stock Trader's Almanac.

Thursday's session hinted at momentum stalling, with both the S&amp;P 500 and Nasdaq posting marginal losses to end multi-session winning runs.

Rising U.S. Treasury yields had been catching investors' attention, with the benchmark 10-year note hitting a more than seven-month high in the previous session. The yield hovered close to that mark on Friday, at 4.63%.

Higher yields are seen as hampering growth stocks, as they raise borrowing costs for business expansion. These stocks, especially the so-called Magnificent Seven technology megacaps which had been key drivers of the market's 2024 rally, were also caught up in Friday's sell-off.

For the second successive day, Tesla led decliners among the group, dropping 5%. Among the other members, Nvidia shed 2.1% while Alphabet, Amazon.com and Microsoft all slipped more than 1.5%.

"We have a higher cost of capital whenever rates go up like this, and they have gone up pretty significantly over the last month or so," said Glenmede's Reynolds.

"Investors may just be reassessing the bets they are taking when the cost of capital is higher, perhaps looking at some of the valuations on the Mag 7 and wondering whether they can find better value elsewhere."

All of the 11 major S&amp;P sectors fell. Friday's worst performers were the three indexes which have been 2024's leading lights: consumer discretionary (.SPLRCD), opens new tab, information technology and communication services. The trio dropped between 1.1% and 1.9% on the day.

Despite Friday's declines, all three indexes recorded weekly gains. For the week, the S&amp;P 500 advanced 0.7%, the Dow edged up 0.36% and the Nasdaq climbed 0.75%.

On Wednesday, the Fed announced its third interest-rate cut of the year but forecast in its summary of economic projections (SEP) just two 25-basis point cuts for 2025, down from its September view of four cuts, in a nod to the economy's continued health and sticky inflation.

The announcement sparked a sharp sell-off late on Wednesday, which equities were unable to bounce back from on Thursday. Even with Friday's rally, each of the three major U.S. indexes declined for the week.

Also providing support were comments from Fed officials, with some acknowledging they were starting to factor in fiscal policy uncertainty, such as tariffs, in their outlooks.

"It's kind of obvious what's going on - it's just this PCE plus dovish Fed commentary offset the market overreaction to the hawkish cut that everybody was expecting," said Jay Hatfield, CEO at Infrastructure Capital Advisors in New York.

"We've seen this like 10 times during this Fed cycle. The market just always overreacts on one side or the other."

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 498.82 points, or 1.18%, to 42,841.06, the S&amp;P 500 gained 63.82 points, or 1.09%, to 5,930.90 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 199.83 points, or 1.03%, to 19,572.60.

The Dow and S&amp;P recorded their biggest daily percentage gains since Nov. 6.

For the week, the S&amp;P 500 fell 1.99%, the Nasdaq declined 1.78%, and the Dow dropped 2.25%.

The Nasdaq snapped a four-week streak of gains, with the S&amp;P 500 suffering its biggest weekly percentage decline in six weeks. The Dow saw its third consecutive weekly fall.

Each of the 11 major S&amp;P sectors advanced in the broad-based rally, led by a gain of 1.8% in real estate and buoyed by a drop in Treasury yields.

Small-cap stocks as measured by the Russell 2000, which are also seen as likely to benefit from lower interest rates, rallied 0.9%.

Markets were also monitoring the U.S. Congress as it scrambled to avert a partial government shutdown before a midnight deadline. Republican leaders in the U.S. House of Representatives said they would vote on Friday to keep the federal government operating.

Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 2.84-to-1 ratio on the NYSE and by a 2.12-to-1 ratio on the Nasdaq.

The S&amp;P 500 posted three new 52-week highs and 23 new lows, while the Nasdaq Composite recorded 51 new highs and 233 new lows.

Friday's session also marks the simultaneous expiry of quarterly derivatives contracts tied to stocks, index options and futures, also known as "triple witching," which boosted trading activity.

Volume on U.S. exchanges was 21.58 billion shares, compared with the 14.87 billion average for the full session over the last 20 trading days.

&quot;It's kind of obvious what's going on - it's just this PCE plus dovish Fed commentary offset the market overreaction to the hawkish cut that everybody was expecting,&quot; said Jay Hatfield, CEO at Infrastructure Capital Advisors in New York.

&quot;We've seen this like 10 times during this Fed cycle. The market just always overreacts on one side or the other.&quot;

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 498.82 points, or 1.18%, to 42,841.06, the S&amp;amp;P 500 gained 63.82 points, or 1.09%, to 5,930.90 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 199.83 points, or 1.03%, to 19,572.60.

The Dow and S&amp;amp;P recorded their biggest daily percentage gains since Nov. 6.

For the week, the S&amp;amp;P 500 fell 1.99%, the Nasdaq declined 1.78%, and the Dow dropped 2.25%.

The Nasdaq snapped a four-week streak of gains, with the S&amp;amp;P 500 suffering its biggest weekly percentage decline in six weeks. The Dow saw its third consecutive weekly fall.

Each of the 11 major S&amp;amp;P sectors advanced in the broad-based rally, led by a gain of 1.8% in real estate and buoyed by a drop in Treasury yields.

Small-cap stocks as measured by the Russell 2000, which are also seen as likely to benefit from lower interest rates, rallied 0.9%.

Markets were also monitoring the U.S. Congress as it scrambled to avert a partial government shutdown before a midnight deadline. Republican leaders in the U.S. House of Representatives said they would vote on Friday to keep the federal government operating.

Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 2.84-to-1 ratio on the NYSE and by a 2.12-to-1 ratio on the Nasdaq.

The S&amp;amp;P 500 posted three new 52-week highs and 23 new lows, while the Nasdaq Composite recorded 51 new highs and 233 new lows.

Friday's session also marks the simultaneous expiry of quarterly derivatives contracts tied to stocks, index options and futures, also known as &quot;triple witching,&quot; which boosted trading activity.

Volume on U.S. exchanges was 21.58 billion shares, compared with the 14.87 billion average for the full session over the last 20 trading days.
