Four Naxalites were killed in an encounter with security forces in Chhattisgarh's Bastar region, a senior police official said on Sunday.
A head constable of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) was also killed in the face-off, he said.
The gunfight broke out on Saturday evening at a forest in south Abujhmaad along the border of Narayanpur and Dantewada districts when a joint team of security personnel was out on an anti-Naxalite operation, the official said.
After the exchange of fire stopped late Saturday night, bodies of four Naxalites and automatic weapons, including AK-47 rifle and self loading rifle (SLR), were recovered from the spot, he said.
DRG head constable Sannu Karam was also killed in the gunfight, the official said.
Search operation was still underway in the area, he added.
Past Attacks
Chhattisgarh's Bastar has been a hot bed of encounters between naxals and police and security forces. Earlier in October 2024, two jawans of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) were killed in a bomb blast carried out by the Naxals in Chhattisgarh's Narayanpur. This happened after the Naxals carried out an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast on the team returning from an anti-Naxal search operation in Abujhmad.
In July, two jawans were killed and four were injured in an IED blast by Naxals in Bijapur district. This occurred when security forces were returning from an anti-Naxal operation and the pipe bomb exploded.
Two Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were killed in June in a similar attack. They were on a routine patrol as part of a Road Opening Party on a truck and bikes when the truck was blown up by the IED blast.
