SAG-AFTRA is a union whose mission includes negotiating the best possible wages and working conditions for professional actors of all ages.

If guided carefully, a young performer’s acting career can give them a head start on their adult lives, help them develop leadership skills, teamwork skills, self-confidence and the ability to earn income.

But because of the many demands, frustrations and rejections tied to the industry, minors working in entertainment are particularly vulnerable.

While SAG-AFTRA does its utmost to protect young performers on the job, it is ultimately the parent or guardian’s responsibility to ensure the young performer is being treated fairly and with respect.

Parents should familiarize themselves with the various contract protections, applicable state laws and trust accounts (sometimes referred to as Coogan Accounts) created specifically for young performers.

Remember, there is nothing new about show biz kids. There have been many generations and there will be countless generations of them in coming years. Families of young performer members should take advantage of the knowledge and expertise of SAG-AFTRA staff experts.

If you have questions, please call or email SAG-AFTRA for guidance at (855) SAG-AFTRA/855 724-2387. Members and their parents should also attend a new member orientation.

Together we can work toward positive experiences for you and all young performers in the entertainment industry.
