Weathering aircraft

You don’t have to pre-shade
There’s definitely a real alternative available to you other than to pre-shade your models and that’s to go for some post-shading to add realistic weathering to your aircraft (and other subjects for that matter). Pre-shading is illustrated elsewhere in your TB, so do have a look at that too.
Why do it?
Well it’s largely a matter of personal preference but I think this post-shading comes into its own especially when you’ve used enamels to paint your model. This is because enamels tend to go on thicker than acrylics, the latter being more subtle when thinned and this allows the pre-shading to show through and enhance your panel lines.
What materials and kit do I need?
Surprisingly little in fact:
- A set of decent quality pastels chalks – I have a Grey Tones set and one featuring Brown Tones. The former is the subject of this demo
- A couple of small ‘stubby’ brushes – these are old paintbrushes that have been cut down so that there’s just 2-3mm of bristles left
