Fascinating talk. A student of Fred Brooks and strongly influenced by
him. Grad thesis on formally verified output of a compiler and working
with Ken Thompson on that deep problem of systeatically replicated
back-doors. Brooks taught him about responsibilty. Someone with the
root password has not just the right “but the responsibility to use
it”. “It’s a lesson I live by”
What responsibilities do we have towards technology today?

Thank you, Bruce; I had the privilege of working with Steve and others when the BTL intranet was being set up late 80s (and ran one of the Usenet nodes leveraging the BTL internal UUCP network). Wishing him good luck as he steps away from Columbia.
