Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency is finally releasing this month after a long battle with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Initially scheduled to release on September 6, 2024, it was postponed indefinitely after the censor board kept delaying the certification procedure. The actor-director maintained her calm throughout the phase and now, her labour of love is set to see the daylight.

Kangana Ranaut on Emergency CBFC Controversy

In an exclusive interview with Times Now, Kangana recalled being devastated after taking the decision to forcefully postpone Emergency. The director of the political drama felt her film would be ‘dumped’ on some OTT platform.
Kangana said, “I was devastated and shattered. Uss time laga ki yeh film kabhi nahi aayegi or will be dumped on OTT. Itna zyada scrutiny film ki ho gayi thi, I started second-guessing my choices. Kya maine sahi nirnay liya political aur sensitive film on Mrs Gandhi’s rise, fall, assassination etc. banake? Socha jaye toh aaj tak kisine nahi banayi hai Emergency jaisi film. Itni toh samajhdar hu jaan saku ki ismein kuch khatra hai. That’s when I realised the intensity of what I had done. When you are an authentic person, you have nothing to worry about.”
(Translation: I was devastated and shattered. Back then, I thought this film would never release or will be dumped on OTT. There was extreme scrutiny around the film that I started second-guessing my choices. Did I take the right decision to make a political and sensitive film on Mrs Gandhi’s rise, fall, assassination etc.? If we look carefully, nobody has made such a film till now. I am mature enough to understand that it is a risky project. That’s when I realised the intensity of what I had done. When you are an authentic person, you have nothing to worry about.)
She added, “Bohot scrutiny hui film ki. Historians ki teams baithi. Alag alag pranton se, samudayon se. Har baat ka mere paas jawab tha, proof tha aur documentation tha. Mujhe phasane ki, latkane ki bohot logon ne koshish ki, lekin we fought it as a team. We had done such strong documentation of each and every event shown. Voh humare kaam aaya.”

Efforts were made to trap me, but we fought it as a team. We had done such strong documentation of each and every event shown. That helped us a lot.)
Emergency was cleared for release in October 2024. The makers agreed to make modifications as suggested by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
The makers claimed that the CBFC had cleared the film with a U/A certificate. However, when they were to receive it, the board declined. After almost a month of legal struggle and court hearings, the political drama got a go-ahead from the CBFC.
