Oscars 2025: Kanguva, Aadujeevitham, And 5 Other Indian Films Selected For Best Picture
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has released the list of 323 feature films eligible for this year's Oscars, with just two months left for the 97th Academy Awards. Out of the 207 films vying for the Best Picture title, seven Indian films have made it to the list. One of the strongest contenders here is Suriya's- Kanguva, which, after an initial mixed response at the box office, has now found a place in the Oscar contenders list. As Laapataa Ladies couldn't make it to the list, films from different regions are ready to shine at the Oscars 2025.
Indian films vying for Oscars 2025
Kanguva
Kanguva is a 2024 Indian Tamil-language epic fantasy action film directed by Siva and produced by Studio Green, together with UV Creations is one of the films on the Oscars 2025 list. The film stars Suriya in dual roles, alongside Bobby Deol, Disha Patani, Natty Subramaniam, KS Ravikumar, Yogi Babu, Redin Kingsley, Kovai Sarala, Ravi Raghavendra and Karunas.
Girls Will Be Girls
Girls Will Be Girls is a 2024 coming-of-age drama written and directed by Shuchi Talati, marking her feature directorial debut. The film stars Preeti Panigrahi, Kani Kusruti, and Kesav Binoy Kiron, with Panigrahi and Kiron making their acting debuts. Set in a boarding school in the Himalayan foothills, it follows teenager Mira's romantic life and complex relationship with her protective mother.
Santosh
Santosh is a 2024 Hindi-language crime drama directed by Sandhya Suri, set in rural north India. The film stars Shahana Goswami as a widow who takes on her late husband's role as a police constable. Santosh had its world premiere in the Un Certain Regard section at the 77th Cannes Film Festival in May 2024, where it garnered positive reviews. The film was selected as the UK's entry for Best International Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards.
Aadujeevitham
The Goat Life (Aadujeevitham) is a 2024 Malayalam-language survival drama directed and co-produced by Blessy, based on the best-selling 2008 novel Aadujeevitham by Benyamin. The film is inspired by the real-life story of Najeeb, a Malayali immigrant laborer in the Gulf. Featuring Prithviraj Sukumaran in the lead role, the cast also includes Jimmy Jean-Louis, KR Gokul, Talib Al Balushi, Rik Aby, Amala Paul, and Shobha Mohan.
Putul
Putul, directed and produced by Indira Dhar, has made history by becoming the first Bengali film to be considered for the Best Picture category at the 97th Academy Awards.
Swatantrya Veer Savarkar
Swatantrya Veer Savarkar is a 2024 Hindi-language biographical film about the life of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, directed, co-written, and co-produced by Randeep Hooda, who also stars in the titular role.
All We Imagine as Light
All We Imagine as Light (2024), written and directed by Payal Kapadia, stars Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, Chhaya Kadam, and Hridhu Haroon. The film premiered at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, winning the Grand Prix and becoming the first Indian film in Cannes' main competition since 1994.
