Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel on Thursday halted the renovation of a Manasa temple near the Kushiara River along the India-Bangladesh international border in Assam's Sribhumi district amid tensions in the neighboring country.
Locals reported that the immersion ghat of Kushiara in Sribhumi town houses a Manasa temple. The temple, in a dilapidated condition, had been granted Rs 3 lakh by the Assam government for renovation. The work commenced on Thursday.
A team of BGB personnel stationed at the Jakiganj point in Bangladesh’s Sylhet division arrived at Sribhumi in a speedboat on Thursday afternoon and objected to the ongoing repair work. Border Security Force (BSF) personnel deployed at the site engaged with the BGB team, which expressed opposition to the renovation. Subsequently, the BSF instructed the workers to pause the construction.
Later that evening, a commandant-level flag meeting between the BSF and BGB was held at the border point in Sribhumi. During the meeting, BSF officials clarified that the renovation was for an existing temple and unrelated to the prevailing tensions between India and Bangladesh. Following discussions, the issue was resolved, and the BSF permitted the temple authorities to resume the renovation, BSF officials said.
