100 years since women entered in the legal profession in South Africa, our aim is to celebrate & accelerate women in law

About us

It’s been 100 years since women were admitted to the legal profession. This century of female practice is marked by a rich multiplicity of roles: women have used their legal training to achieve any number of path-breaking firsts. We are prosecutors and public defenders, in-house corporate counsel, magistrates judges, Cabinet ministers, and chief regulators. We serve government, business, civil society and our communities. The 100+ campaign looks to celebrate each of these achievements and to help nurture a new generation of women lawyers so that we might use our law degrees in support of whatever our ambitions might be. As a decentralised campaign, looking to activate participation from a wide array of institutions and initiatives – big or small — in which women lawyers feature, the campaign will reflect the depth and diversity of the parts played by women lawyers since their first admission 100 years ago. 10 April 2023 marks 100 years since this significant alteration in the opportunities available to women in law. To mark the centenary of the Act’s passage and to foster the commitment to creating even more opportunities for women in law, we create the 100+ campaign.

Ofentse Monye is an accredited paralegal from the South African Law School and a current LLB student at the University of South Africa/Universiteit van Suid-Afrika. Her academic journey reflects a commitment to legal excellence, coupled with a strong drive to develop practical skills. During her studies, Ofentse joined the UNISA Black Lawyers Association Unisa-Tshwane. Student Chapter (BLASC), where she actively engaged with fellow aspiring legal professionals and explored the pressing legal issues faced by South African communities. This experience has deepened her understanding of the role law plays in addressing societal challenges. In addition to her academic pursuits, Offenses has gained valuable hands-on experience by completing her practical training at a law firm. This opportunity allowed her to work on various cases, refining her ability to navigate the complexities of legal practice. By combining theoretical knowledge with practical expertise, Ofentse is equipping herself to make a meaningful impact within the legal profession. “To me, a centenary represents more than just a passage of 100 years; it’s an opportunity to reflect on the social, political, and economic progress made over a century. Sociologically, it highlights how societies evolve, adapt, and reshape their cultural norms. Politically, it can mark critical milestones in governance, democracy, or struggles for justice and equality. Economically, a centenary can showcase the long-term impact of policies, growth patterns, and how economic shifts have affected people’s lives. It’s a moment to critically assess these developments and consider the lessons learned for the future.” #100more #CountMeIn #WomenInLaw

“As a young girl growing up in Mdantsane, watching the popular television series “Sokhulu and Partners”, I remember saying to my granny “Mama ndifuna ubaligqwetha xandimdala”, which translates to “Mama I want to be a lawyer when I grow up”. Little did I know what the profession entailed; little did I know how my journey would be like to become a candidate attorney at a firm I prayed to get into. From studying at UWC, getting involved in job shadow programs to ensure I am certain about what I am studying and lastly to completing my studies and getting to where I am now, my entire journey is not something I take for granted.” Khanyisa Monqo is a dedicated and ambitious LLB graduate from the University of the Western Cape, currently in her first year of articles at Herold Gie Attorneys in Cape Town. Known for her strong work ethic and determination, she consistently strives for excellence in every endeavour. Her extroverted nature enables her to build trust and establish rapport effortlessly, making her a valuable team player in any environment. In addition to her legal career, Khanyisa previously served as the Chief Executive Officer of The Chamber of Legal Students, an organization that provides free disciplinary defensive and advisory services to pupils in basic education. Under her leadership, the organization empowered university law students to assist learners facing disciplinary hearings, showcasing her passion for advocacy, community development, and uplifting others through education and legal support. “Starting my articles at Herold Gie has been nothing short of a privilege, I have always wanted to serve my articles at a firm that does rotations, seeing women in senior positions sets the bar for me that not only are women capable and smart but we can grow within the field to occupy spaces that we previously couldn’t. That is why this celebration is so important to celebrate the women who came before us in this profession, those that are still paving the way currently in practice and us who have just entered and are still to make our own unique mark”, says Khanyisa “For me, the centenary holds profound significance, symbolizing continuous growth, evolution and the relentless flow of time. It serves as an occasion to celebrate accomplishments, cherish memories and contemplate the future journey of women in this prestigious profession.” #100more #CountMeIn #WomenInLaw
