📈💰 Quick Gains Series: How to improve your municipal revenues Municipalities in South Africa provide their citizens with 💧 Water, ⚡ Electricity, 🚽 Sewer, and 🗑 Refuse Collection services. When properties are developed and services become active, it often happens that these services aren't activated on the billing system. This leads to lost revenues of the worst kind: Those that actually cost something to provide! It is near impossible to reconcile all these independent datasets across all the different departments using Excel VLOOKUPs and pivot tables. (The only time you'd ever use such inefficient tools to do the work is if you're billing by the hour 🤑) I've found that the most effective way of identifying these unbilled services is by bringing all the different accounts into the same context on a map. 📈💰 Quick Gains Series: How to improve your municipal revenues In my experience, one of the major causes of municipal revenues being lost has to do with Supplementary Valuations. General Valuations only happen every couple of years, but in between many properties increase in value for various reasons such as improvements. Such increases in value are published and approved on Supplementary Rolls. The information in the Supplementary Roll must then be updated in the municipal billing system. This ensures that the correct valuation and land use is used for calculating property rates.
