This week from 02 - 06 December 2024, a Regional Training Course on Molecular and Genomic Information in Livestock Breeding Programs, Aligned with Community-Based Breeding Programs was held in South Africa, organized by the Agricultural Research Council (ARC) - Biotechnology Platform (BTP) in partnership with the IAEA and the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy. We were thrilled to welcome 16 delegates from Algeria, Burkina Faso,Lesotho, Mauritania, Niger,Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The course featured insightful plenary sessions from local experts, hands-on lab work including DNA extraction and genotyping, and practical sessions on genomic data analysis using R Studio and PLINK tools. It was a truly interactive experience, equipping participants with the practical and theoretical knowledge to enhance livestock breeding programs in their respective regions. The training concluded with a certification ceremony. The certificates were presented by the Course Director Dr. Khanyisile Hadebe and IAEA official Dr. Farai Muchadeyi, marking the successful completion of the course. #LivestockBreeding #Genomics #SustainableAgricultureInAfrica #CollaborationForChange #ARC

ARC-Animal Production Irene campus' Analytical Services had a gathering on the 20th of November 2024 to celebrate its continued accreditation (28 years uninterrupted). We are proud to announce that the South African National Accreditation System (SANAS) has granted our laboratories with continued accreditation for ISO/IEC 17025, an evidence to our commitment to quality, accuracy, and excellence in our laboratory services. This achievement is valid for the next 5 years, reinforcing our dedication to maintaining the highest standards in our laboratories. Kudos to our Analytical Services team for making this possible and working hard. This achievement shows how competent and committed we are to laboratory quality. Thank you to the ARC-AP General Manager (Prof. Norman Maiwashe) for his guidance and support, the ARC-AP Project Co-ordinator (Ms. Irene Lepuru), the GM’s Office Manager (Ms. Kabelo Ndlovu), and all support services colleagues.
