🚨 The relationship between gender-based violence (GBV) and alcohol is multi-faceted and deeply interconnected. It needs urgent action The First South African National Gender-Based Violence Study (2022) reveals how hazardous drinking perpetuates violence and leaves vulnerable communities at risk. Key Findings: - Men's hazardous alcohol use is a significant driver of intimate partner violence. - Harmful gender norms, coupled with alcohol abuse, create a toxic cycle that fuels GBV. In August 2020, DGMT CEO, David Harrison, addressed the Portfolio Committee on Social Development about the link between alcohol and gender-based violence. His presentation outlined practical, actionable steps to tackle this dual crisis. 🎥 Watch his full presentation and explore measures to break this cycle of violence: https://loom.ly/k834O-U #AlcoholHarmsReduction #ReThinkYourDrink #16DaysOfActivism #GBV

  • #Beyond16Days: A Year-Round Commitment to Ending Gender-Based Violence As the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence draws to a close, we must remember that combating violence is not a time-limited campaign—it's a continuous journey that requires unwavering dedication. #A Call to Action for Men Gender-based violence is not a "women's issue"—it's a societal challenge that demands active participation from everyone, especially men. We challenge men to be more than passive observers: allies, advocates, and change agents. Protect the women in your life—your mothers, sisters, daughters, friends, and colleagues—by challenging toxic behaviours, speaking out against violence, and creating safe spaces. #Leading from the Front: Our Youth Organisation's Commitment Our Peer-to-Peer Programme is a testament to our belief that meaningful change starts with education and dialogue. By empowering young men and women to discuss gender equality, we're cultivating a generation that understands respect, consent, and mutual dignity. #Engaging the Youth: A Collective Responsibility Young people are not just the future—they are the present. Your voice can challenge harmful norms, break cycles of violence, and create transformative change. Join our initiatives, spark conversations, and be the catalyst for a more equitable society. Conclusion The 16 Days of Activism may have ended, but our commitment has not. We invite everyone—men, women, young and old—to stand together in creating a world where safety is a right, not a privilege. #EndGenderBasedViolence #YouthLeadership #Equality #AmathubaCollective #CreatingChange

  • An Epic Wellness Wednesday Yoga Session at Amathuba🌟 We were thrilled to welcome Amy Manhard a vibrant Masters in Social Work student from the University of Denver who led an electrifying yoga session for our Wellness Wednesday initiative, thanks to our fantastic partner Educo Africa On a sun-soaked December morning, our team gathered at The Company Gardens to bask in the warmth and rejuvenate after a demanding year. Amy guided us through a dynamic series of yoga exercises, blending relaxation with a dash of intensity, pushing us to our limits while nurturing our minds and bodies. Here’s what some of our energized participants had to say: - Lusanda: “This session was more challenging than the previous one!” - Odwa: “This one was draining; it felt more like a fitness exercise!” - A first-time participant: “It was my first time doing yoga, and it was an enlightening experience!” This incredible session showcased Amathuba’s unwavering commitment to employee wellness. It was the perfect blend of relaxation, challenge, and camaraderie, offering a much-needed break and a fantastic opportunity to connect with colleagues in a fun and relaxed setting. A huge shoutout to Educo for bringing these amazing people to us and making this session possible! #WellnessWednesday #YogaSession #EmployeeWellness #Amathuba #Mindfulness #Relaxation #TeamBuilding #Educo #CreatingChange

  • World AIDS Day : A Community United for Health On December 3rd, the Amathuba Collective joined our neighbors at The Hope Exchange (Formerly The Carpenter's Shop) for an event to commemorate International HIV/AIDS Day. This event, held in partnership with Cape Peninsula University of Technology Health Services, provided an opportunity for community members to get tested for HIV/AIDS and other chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes, which was also commemorated in November. The youth who participated in the event did not leave empty-handed. They received gift bags and red ribbons to symbolize their support and awareness. Additionally, with the festive season approaching, free sexual protective gear was distributed to ensure everyone's safety during the holidays. The event was not only about health checks but also about fostering a sense of community and support. Here are some reflections from the colleagues who attended: #Sisipho: "It was heartwarming to see my fellow young people taking charge of their health. The atmosphere was positive and encouraging." #Cinga: "The gift bags and ribbons were a nice touch, but the most important part was the awareness and education we received." The event highlighted the importance of health awareness and community support. As we approach the festive season, the event served as a reminder of the importance of taking care of our health and each other. Thank you to Hope Exchange for inviting us to this impactful event! Let's continue to support and participate in community health initiatives. Share your experiences and join us in spreading awareness about the importance of health and wellness! #WellnessDay #CommunityHealth #HIVAIDSAwareness #HealthAwareness #CommunitySupport #CreatingChange #AmathubaCollective #HopeExchange #CPUTWellness
