Experts in wastewater treatment, biogas production and sustainable energy - we fuse global knowledge & local insight.

About us

In our group we have developed a number of technologies in water treatment, energy (biogas) production and nutrient recovery. Among those are state of the art technologies for nutrient recovery of Phosphorus (ANPHOS®), Nitrogen (AMFER®) and Sulphur (BIDOX®), each based on the C-2-C concept. Furthermore we have developed a unique and sustainable technology for nitrogen removal from waste water (NAS®) and for digestate mixing and processing (Digestmix®). In order to further improve the effluent quality to fresh water quality for boiler feed or cooling towers or to process water, a new RO-Recycle® process has been developed. Current state of the art RO systems are capable of phosphate removal such that chemical de-phosphatization steps can be skipped after biological water purification. These technologies were realized in close collaboration with academia in various parts of Europe, e.g. University of Gent (Belgium), Ionina (Greece), Kopenhagen (Denmark) and Utrecht (The Netherlands). In this way a broad spectrum of technologies has been developed over the past 25 years. These technologies enable our group to provide focused add-on solutions to a given type of technological challenge, but at the same time offer a holistic project approach for our customers. Not only will Aquest Colsen deal with the water treatment aspect of a project, we will also ensure that energy and nutrient recovery are part of a sustainable solution. In addition, Aquest Colsen will not only look into the optimized bioconversion of waste streams, we will also ensure that the biogas thus produced is further processed in the most economic and environmentally friendly manner. In those cases where project execution requires permits for the local authorities, we are capable of assisting in their preparation. Through our strong bonds with universities, we are able to constantly improve our technology portfolio.

  • Another milestone, another reason to celebrate! We welcomed the mayor of Port Elizabeth (Mr. G. van Niekerk) and the CEO of Orion Engineered Carbons (Mr. C. Painter) to join our projects and engineering manager (Mr. E. Smit) in the cutting of the ribbon at our newly commissioned wastewater treatment plant on the Orion site. This state of the art, 100 m3/h, facility takes in treated sewerage from the fish water flats across the road and purifies it to high quality boiler feed water. A classic example of how waste can be reused for industrial operations while encouraging sustainable practices. #sustainablility #waterreuse #innovation #AquestColsen

      +1
  • Strict minimal discharge requirements? This is a challenge we like to take on at Aquest. Our client in a remote location has no facilities for waste discharge and is currently benefitting from one of our ultra high water recovery designs. Our client is completely self-sustaining and independent from municipal water supply, taking in borehole water and treating and reusing their wastewater with an overall recovery of 99%. A big step in sustainable practices using innovative technologies and expert minds. #waterreuse #innovation #sustainability #watersecurity #watertreatment

Water reservoirs in South Africa were nearly empty two years ago, inching dangerously close to “day zero” when water stops flowing from the taps.  The crisis inspired Orion to build a water treatment system at our Nelson Mandela Bay site that recycles wastewater from the municipality so that we can use it in our production process.  “With this project, we’re demonstrating our commitment to our company’s core values: accountability, innovation and building enduring relationships,” Orion CEO Corning Painter says. “Finding an innovative solution to conserving water is one of the best ways we can strengthen our relationship with the community and improve supply security for our customers.”   Read more about this impactful engineering project in our 2023 Sustainability Report linked in the comments below.

Exciting progress on our water recovery project for Gateway Mall in Umhlanga! 💧 We're on track to produce non-potable water from the mall's wastewater for various secondary purposes, significantly contributing to sustainable water management. The civil works for the MBR tank are complete, and the mechanical installation is well underway. We commend our client for their forward-thinking approach in integrating this water recovery project into their overall facilities design. Stay tuned for more updates as we move forward, with the first water expected to be produced after the winter months. #WaterRecovery #Sustainability #Innovation #EnvironmentalStewardship

Last Friday we saw the visit of the Executive Mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality to our Demin water production plant at Orion Engineered Carbons. We welcome the interest of our Mayor to our ultra-modern water re-use facility which Aquest Colsen, with our partners, has designed and built for Orion Engineered Carbons. This plant takes in final effluent from Fishwater Flats WWTW and treats the water to target specifications for industrial usage. This project re-uses the water which otherwise would have been discharged in the ocean as waste, and simultaneously reduces the pressure on the available drinking water resources in a geographical area which is often plagued by persistent droughts. A win for our Metro’s inhabitants as well as for our client! #AquestColsen #WaterReuse #InfrastructureDevelopment #EcoFriendly #WaterSecurity In the photo: Mr. Gary van Niekerk (left) and Ryan Silbernagl (right).

  • Our client is benefiting from Aquest Colsen’s expertise and services to operate a wastewater treatment plant which processes a challenging effluent stream, coming from a textile manufacturing facility, for reuse. The technology involves course filtration as pretreatment, ozonation and nanofiltration for removing colour from the stream caused by dyes, followed by reverse osmosis desalination for the high salinity wastewater. Various treated product streams are reused in the manufacturing process again. The client is assured his effluent is treated to target specifications and can focus on their core business while enjoying healthy cost savings on water. #AquestColsen #WaterReuse #InfrastructureDevelopment #EcoFriendly #WaterSecurity
