  • The City of Cape Town plans to transform a section of the Athlone Stadium parking area into a mixed-use precinct, as part of a long-term vision to turn the precinct into a vibrant hub that attracts more investment and benefits the community. The mixed-use development is likely to include retail, commercial, and residential. Globally, projects such as Tottenham Stadium in London and Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria have embraced mixed-use developments within sports precincts, demonstrating how value for the economy and society. Can all of South Africa play a part in an Olympic Games? Yes! While the 84% figures for existing and temporary venues excludes excludes 2010 FIFA World Cup stadiums across the country, which could be used for the football competition - the IOC encourages the use of venues across a host country. – Stadiums like Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, FNB Stadium in Johannesburg, Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha, and others would help extend the Games to more cities, showcasing South Africa’s diversity and passion for sport.

What do we mean by Additional venues? These are venues or sites which represent the gap between what Cape Town and Western Cape has today in terms of potential sports venues for the Games, and what would still be required as permanent or temporary venues. – The IOC recommends only building permanent venues where they have a clear legacy value and align with city or national long-term plans. – For Cape Town, this means a temporary athletics stadium and 4–5 indoor arenas (temporary or permanent) - where would you locate them? – Where there is no demonstrated long-term need, temporary venues or even facilities in other cities or regions could be used. This approach ensures that the Games are sustainable and deliver value beyond the event. assumes *the above assumes that no new venues (e.g no expansion to exhibition or convention centres, no new school, university or other facilities) will be delivered

What do we mean by Temporary venues or sites? Temporary sites and venues are activated or built specifically for an event and removed afterwards. They are designed to provide flexible and cost-effective solutions, often using existing public spaces, roads, amenities and reusable materials. – Cape Town already already has extensive experience with some of these temporary venues or sites e.g. events like Triathlons at the V&A and Green Point Park, Beach Volleyball at Camps Bay/Grand Parade, and iconic cycling and road running races. For the purposes of the Games, they are classified as temporary sites. For example, the Cape Town Cycle Tour, starting at City Hall and the Grand Parade, welcomes over 30,000 cyclists, but the Olympics would require facilities for just 200–250 cyclists for men’s and women’s road events. – Similarly, Paris 2024 used Place de la Concorde, as a temporary site to host skateboarding, BMX and Breaking events, which were removed after the Games. *In this classification we have excluded temporary venues which are costly or large e.g. new temporary indoor arenas. ** Our June 2024 study showed that Cape Town could make use of 84% existing and temporary venues for a potential future Olympic Games, assuming no new venues are built and excluding football venues across the country.

What does "Existing Venue, Permanent Works Required" mean? These are facilities that if significantly upgraded/renovated would meet Games standards - but still likely require a business plan and financing to achieve this. – For example, the Bellville Velodrome needs upgrades to its roof and internal facilities to meet national events regulation and Games standards. – The Good Hope Centre would require extensive modernisation to accommodate indoor sports such as gymnastics or badminton - but would leave a lasting community legacy. – Newlands Swimming Pool (and Sea Point) would need significant upgrades to host national or international events. – Zeekoevlei and Athlone Baseball club already have high community use, and sporting and social value but with permanent upgrades could also be fit for national and international events ** Our June study showed that Cape Town could make use of 84% existing and temporary venues for a potential future Olympic Games, assuming no new venues are built and excluding football venues across the country.

What does "Existing Venue, No Permanent Works Required" mean? An existing venue, requiring no permanent works, refers to a facility that only needs temporary adjustments—such as branding, additional seating, or back-of-house facilities—to host specific sports. These costs are typically covered by the organizing committee and are part of standard event preparations. – For example, Cape Town Stadium is ready to host football or rugby with minimal lead time. – Hartleyvale Stadium is well-suited for hockey, requiring temporary seating and back-of-house facilities. – The CTICC has hosted indoor sports before and would mainly need temporary seating to accommodate 2–3 sports, as demonstrated during the 2023 Netball World Cup * Our June 2024 study showed that Cape Town could make use of 84% existing and temporary venues for a potential future Olympic Games, assuming no new venues are built and excluding football venues across the country.

  • South Africa will begin exploring the possibility of hosting the Olympic Games through informal dialogue with the IOC as an Interested Party. "At this stage, engagements with the IOC are non-committal, with the emphasis being on how best to shape an Olympic bid that will work best for South Africa and the Olympic Movement under the guidance of the IOC. Minister McKenzie emphasised the fact that no country in Africa has ever hosted any edition of an Olympics, and South Africa’s bid should be seen as a bid for the entire continent." https://lnkd.in/dFmHtJ4p Read about the Informal Exchange phase here: https://lnkd.in/dnxQa6bk
