Bridging the gap in the study, research and practice of philanthropy and social investment in Africa
About us
Located at Wits Business School in South Africa, the Centre on African Philanthropy and Social Investment (CAPSI) works to bridge the gap in the study, research and practice of philanthropy and social investment in Africa. Global interest in the field of philanthropy and social investment in Africa and continents outside of Euro-America is growing exponentially. Recent years have seen a considerable increase in research and writings related to these topics. Despite this, the study of these fields is in a nascent stage, with very little formal academic research, teaching and publications available in Africa. In response to this lack of dedicated, formal academic focus, Wits Business School and the Southern Africa Trust introduced the African Centre for Philanthropy and Social Investment. The Centre aims to support the advancement of this field, by filling the current gaps in teaching, research, and publication. The Centre serves as a source of knowledge, a cultivator of partnerships, and a catalyst for innovation, community engagement and a heightened sense of citizenship and social responsibility throughout the African continent and beyond. From the outset, this initiative took on a wider pan African outlook – seeking to understand philanthropic behaviour in different contexts and histories.

𝗔𝗱ɔ𝘆ɛ, 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝗽𝘆 | We started 2025 off on a positive note with our Adoye programme co-hosting the 𝘼𝙛𝙧𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙒𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙣 𝙒𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙨' 𝘾𝙞𝙧𝙘𝙡𝙚 inaugural retreat alongside Nawi Africa. This initiative aims to nurture creativity and amplify African women's voices through writing, with the retreat providing the space and resources to support this. The group of 17 writers from 15 countries participated in the inaugural 12-day retreat, where they were provided with teaching, coaching and support to sharpen and elevate their writing and storytelling capabilities. Under the guidance of acclaimed writers Joyce Nyairo, Ph. D and Zukiswa Wanner, participants immersed themselves in their respective projects, with each emerging with a piece of writing that will be developed through further support that the initiative has committed to provide. The objectives of the African Women Writers' Circle contribute to growing the body of writing authored by women on the continent. During the 12-days, facilitators ran workshop sessions that covered topics that included: - Finding form - Feminist approaches to narrative structure - Defining elements of style - Rewriting and editing - Forms of publishing We are proud to partner with this truly pan-African initiative alongside organisations that support programmes and visions that enable and empower women in philanthropy and development. #africanphilanthropy #womeninphilanthropy
