CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation reposted this
Engendering the media space In the last three weeks, I have been strengthening the capacities of teams and organisations in documentation and storytelling. First was with the Uganda Media Women's Association, where I trained their teams in gender-responsive reporting and tracking. I also developed modules for them on gender-responsive elections and budgeting reporting. Then, I shared knowledge and experience with the African Feminist Research Institute For Advocacy & Development (AFRAD) under the Strengthening Digital Capacity for Enhanced Civic Action project supported by CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation. Last week, it was a two-day activity with the Women's International Peace Centre on gender-responsive and sensitive reporting during the electoral cycle in Uganda. Human-centred stories can powerfully impact public opinion, policy-making and governance processes, and sensitive and transformative reporting is crucial in countries like Uganda, where violence is rife during elections. The tone of the news report, the choice of words, and the timing or motive of doing the story can have such a big impact. Examining gender-based violence, peace journalism, and women's political participation is important. So, we divulged into these issues, exploring the rationale and digging deep into impact and best practices. Engendering the civic space, including journalism practice, could not be more timely as the electoral process in Uganda gets underway.

🟠 Dylan Mathews joins our call to end gender-based violence ✊🎗️🧡 Dylan is the Chair of the Board of Directors at CIVICUS and CEO of Peace Direct. "We all should care about gender-based violence because one in three women and girls experience gender-based violence. That means we all know someone who will experience it in their lives. [Therefore], all of us have to do something about it. All of us, in whichever way we can, should participate in this action. Activism is something not just for the activists. [It] is, as a famous writer once said, 'my rent for living on this planet.' So I encourage you all to do something in the next 16 days." #16DaysOfActivism #NoExcuse

#Georgia: The decision to delay EU talks until 2028 has sparked massive protests in Tbilisi. The police have used excessive force against protesters. We urge authorities to uphold the right to peaceful assembly and end police brutality. #CivicFreedoms

Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) are at the forefront of the global fight for human rights, driving positive change despite the disproportionate impact of shrinking civic space. Many WHRDs have been arbitrarily detained for their courage to stand for freedom and justice. Let’s support them and stand as their witness. We call for due process and their immediate, unconditional release. #StandAsTheirWitness #StandAsMyWitness #16DaysOfActivism 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gWkRpkR

🟠 Jessica Corredor V joins our call to end gender-based violence ✊🎗️🧡 Jessica is the Chief Officer for Advocacy and Solidarity Action at CIVICUS. "One out of three women in the world suffer from [gender-based] violence in their lives. Cuando tocan a una, nos tocan a todas, that means, when one of us gets attacked, you're attacking us all.
