The discussion explored the global and South African impact of wildlife crimes, highlighting a pilot project testing innovative restorative justice approaches for environmental crimes. In a groundbreaking moment for conservation, the Critically Endangered Amathole Toad has been heard breeding for the first time in decades. In early August, @Bionerds and the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) ventured into the Amathole Mountains near Hogsback to monitor this elusive species, which is found only in a handful of wetlands in the region. Despite the threats of forestry and habitat loss, this remarkable discovery offers renewed hope. The EWT is collaborating with local farmers to safeguard these critical wetlands, with plans underway to establish a Nature Reserve centered on the toad's survival. With Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Day celebrated globally today, we recognize how GIS are empowering individuals and organizations to address pressing global challenges. Given that human activities impact 75% of the world’s land, biodiversity is under severe threat, especially for species inhabiting fragile ecosystems. Strategic development must play a central role in reversing this trend, and GIS tools offer the precision and data-driven insights needed to foster effective solutions. Developed by the EWT's Science Unit, the "Threatened Species No-Go Mapping Tool," launched in 2021, is a powerful example of GIS technology in action. Created using advanced GIS software, this free resource enables planners to identify and avoid harmful developments in critical habitats. By integrating detailed spatial data, the tool empowers conservationists to prioritize and protect unprotected areas, ensuring that biodiversity thrives even in a rapidly changing world. Congratulations to Damian Walters, who received the SA Wetland Society Stewardship Award at the recent National Wetland Awards! Damian has dedicated his life to protecting cranes across Southern and East Africa, and his efforts have been instrumental in conserving these majestic birds and their habitats. Through the International Crane Foundation, African Crane Conservation Programme, and the Endangered Wildlife Trust, he works alongside communities to ensure wetlands remain healthy for cranes and countless other species. After a decade of dedicated service, Buks, one of our Livestock Guardian Dogs, is retiring. This incredible dog has protected his herd from predators, ensuring not a single goat was lost under his watch. He even became a star on 50/50 and featured in a BBC documentary!
