For Women in Law

As we close out the year, my heart is full of gratitude and pride for all that For Women in Law has accomplished in 2024. This year, we turned 6—a milestone that reminds me of how far this platform has come. We hosted our very first Legal Careers Workshop, this was the highlight of my year 🥹🫶🏾🥰, we partnered with STBB to award bursaries to our mentees—an honor that aligns so closely with our mission, we interviewed phenomenal #womeninlaw, collaborated with institutions across the country, also introduced our Job Shadowing Program for our mentees, launched exciting new merch, and expanded our services. I am filled with a refreshed fire to create even more intentionally through this platform ❤️ A big & special thank you to my right hand Olivia Kalanga Muya ❤️ your hard work and dedication have been instrumental in making this year such a success. Your creativity, commitment, and support behind the scenes have brought our vision to life in ways I could never have imagined. I’m so grateful for you! During our last contact session, we were joined by guest mentors Nqobile Mbatha and Kekeletso Sebakeng. Nqobile is a legal practitioner, entrepreneur, and founder of SNC Creatives. Kekeletso is a Graduate Recruitment Manager. They shared their career journeys, and what came to mind was that we oftentimes focus on an individual's current successes without noting the hurdles they had to jump to get there. Getting insight into all aspects of one's career journey is inspiring and encouraging at the same time when you encounter challenges along the way. Both their journeys are unique and similar in the sense that they exposed themselves to different paths until they unearthed their passions. We got into discussions about the world of work, and honestly, you must do anything in your power to pursue your dreams or go after your goals. They also noted how vital it is to utilize every opportunity at your disposal and be confident about your path. We received advice on how to tackle everything required when applying for a job in the legal space and branding yourself in a manner that is appropriate for your legal journey if not any career path. ⚖️ Reflections on Leadership and Mentorship as an Attorney ⚖️ There are moments in my career when I think I can figure everything out on my own no guidance, no asking for help, just pure hustle 😅. Looking back, I realize how much I missed by not seeking mentorship early on. Being a guest Mentor at the For Women in Law mentorship program for students pursuing law reminded me of something I’d forgotten, the true value of mentorship and leadership. It’s not just about having someone guide you, it’s about learning from their experiences, growing together, and getting real advice that makes a difference. Sometimes we think we need to have it all figured out, but in reality, the best leaders are those who are open to learning and sharing. This program reaffirmed that the right guidance can make all the difference in our legal journey. To all the mentors out there, thank you for the wisdom you share. And to anyone who’s on the fence about seeking mentorship DO IT! 🗣️. The best investment you can make is in your own growth. On the 5th of October, we had our third For Women in Law contact session with Mateenah Hunter who shared her insights on balancing life and a career in law. What I also found interesting and encouraging was that she has been part of different areas of law, meaning it is okay to venture into different departments until you find the right area. It is always good to get a reminder from people who have been on the same journey as you that you are not running out of time exploring most, if not every, avenues.
