As a result, older buildings that do not meet the minimum criteria will incur penalising carbon taxes due to their inefficiency, and in turn will be required to undergo a costly retrofitting process to improve their energy performance, if they want to remain viable. The cost of the real estate sector’s compliance with 2030 regulations, is estimated at a staggering €2.8 trillion.
