In the wake of the Grand Challenges African Drug Discovery Accelerator (GC ADDA) Drug Discovery and Development Course that we hosted last week, we can't help but reflect on the invigorating engagement with and generous knowledge sharing of scientists from across the continent and the globe. It was an honour to have some of the brightest minds in the industry sharing their insights on the entire gambit of the drug discovery process - from identifying suitable disease targets to developing a patent strategy to protect your innovation. Thank you to Dr Jeremy Burrows, Dr Bakela Nare, Dr Dirk Lamprecht, Dr Kirandeep Kaur Samby, Dr Greg Basarab, Dr Joe Eyermann, Prof Franco Lombardo, Dr Abdallah Derbalah, Dr Cristina Donini, and Dr Olawale Salami for your excellent presentations. Thank you to each attendee for your enthusiastic and thoughtful participation. And a special shout-out to our very own Dr Susan Winks and Nicola Elliott-Wong for working tirelessly to plan and execute a remarkable week of learning, workshopping and networking. We look forward to connecting with everyone in the future! Thanks to Tamarac Park Searll for the official images! #drugdiscovery #drugdevelopment #gcadda #lifelonglearning #scienceforafrica

We feel truly honoured to have spent the past two days rubbing shoulders with the next generation of Africa's scientific leaders. As hosts of the Grand Challenges African Drug Discovery Accelerator (GC ADDA) Global Health Mentorship Programme (GHMP) Scientific Leadership Workshop, we couldn't have asked for a more engaged and enthusiastic group of mentees! Thank you again to mentors Dr Renata Lazarova, M.D. (Synendos Therapeutics AG) and Mr Mina Magdy (Merck Group), as well as the GHMP core team of Dr Susan Winks (H3D), Prof Pillai Goonaseelan (Colin) (CP+ Associates GmbH) and Ms Nicola Elliott-Wong for going the extra mile to make it an exceptional opportunity. Best of all? The fun's not over yet! Today, we're heading straight into Day 1 of the four-day GC ADDA Drug Discovery and Development Course. Over the next four days, we have a line-up of legendary speakers sharing insight into every stage of drug discovery - from identifying suitable disease targets and setting up assays to clinical trials and patent strategy. We'll be posting pics and highlights throughout the week, so stay tuned. #drugdiscovery #drugdevelopment #scienceforafrica #gcadda #grandchallenges

Thank you for sharing IFPMA!
🤝 Partnerships are essential in addressing #GlobalHealth challenges and fostering robust innovation ecosystems. The H3D Foundation founded by Professor Kelly Chibale is an example of how collaboration can empower researchers, strengthen drug discovery infrastructure, and bridge the gap between the lab and the patient. ✨ Since 2019, the H3D Foundation has worked to uplift Africa’s capacity for pharmaceutical R&D, complemented by strategic partnerships with organizations like IFPMA and member companies. These collaborations enable skill-building, mentorship, and the expansion of networks, equipping African scientists to lead globally impactful drug discovery efforts. 💡 As Professor Chibale highlights in his article for Health Policy Watch partnerships are critical to overcoming barriers such as infrastructure gaps, funding challenges, and a lack of local resources. They amplify the continent’s potential to address human diseases by working closer to the populations affected, enabling tailored solutions for local and global health needs. ⤵️ Read more about the H3D Foundation’s work and the transformative impact of partnerships on global health in the full article: https://lnkd.in/dXch3Kab #HealthInnovation #Partnerships #GlobalHealth #AfricaInnovation

We are proud to announce that our CEO Prof Kelly Chibale has been elected to an Honorary Fellowship at his University of Cambridge alma mater, Queens' College, Cambridge. Honorary Fellowships are awarded in recognition of significant achievement in a scholar's chosen field. It is the highest honour the College can bestow on an individual. Kelly was conferred with the Fellowship on 13 December 2024 and took the opportunity to visit the Department of Chemistry, where he completed his PhD in synthetic organic chemistry in the early 1990s under the supervision of Stuart Warren. “While I always get goosebumps each time I return to the department, this visit was particularly impactful," says Kelly. H3D Foundation reposted this
In 2020 when we established African Pharmaceutical Network (APN), a challenge we were struggling with was that most of the discourse on what needed to happen to unlock possibilities & value in Africa's pharmaceutical value chain was not pragmatic to local nuances. One such area was in #ClinicalTrials. We all acknowledge the value of clinical trials in medicines development as a critical piece in ensuring we have the tools to prevent, diagnose, treat or manage medical conditions. From an African lens, this should be linked to diseases affecting people in the continent (established need) and local capabilities. This should also be aligned with global advances which means that governments need to work to create an ecosystem that will enable industry players to build capabilities and harness this potential. This is still lacking. Africa with a high burden of infectious diseases has to invest in developing and optimizing therapies for these - unfortunately from a global R&D pipeline, the majority of new developments or research are not on these disease areas. Who will develop therapies for the #African populace? With advances in #genetherapies, #precisionmedicine and #biotherapeutics, the only way we will ensure clinical trials for these therapies happen in #Africa is when we build the right infrastructure for these. Not much is happening on this front yet these are some of the priorities we believe should be addressed in the continent to unlock value in the #ClinicalTrial space in Africa. Strategies towards the operationalization of #AMA need to consider the gaps in clinical research capabilities in the continent with a strategy to change the narrative. We acknowledge the contribution of stakeholders in the space but believe more can be done. This is why we currently invest in capacity building but keen on the next frontier to build the infrastructure needed - probably establish a model clinical research site with capabilities to conduct studies in advanced therapies and medicinal products #ATMPs. In the process, we are keen on working with regulators, industry stakeholders and academia to shape the future. This article by the World Economic Forum outlines the value of conducting clinical research in Africa - we are charting the path to make it a reality. Investing in the building blocks and fostering partnerships necessary.
