Someone forgot to remove us from the CC: line of an e-mail. It changed EVERYTHING. (email below)... 📩 👨💻 "Friends.... the paragraph highlighted is the matter I have always worried about in this transaction... Pardon me, but I don’t like this." 👨💻 Remember the families who were resettled that I shared about? Or... the recent post on the long-dated closure and environmental liabilities that were sold off from a tier 1 listed company to a private entity that is renowned for irresponsible and unethical practices? Well... this clumsy e-mail started there. I'll preface with this, #mining is complex, as are #communities. But the world depends highly on mining, and mining depends on communities. So, I asked some basic questions to this company to understand if (this is what was referenced as "highlighted" in the e-mail): ➡ The #pollution had been cleaned up? ➡ It was safe for people to move back to those lands that were resettled at outset of the closure? (Let's be honest... encroachment happens, people go back to their ancestral lands, and I couldn't help but notice the soils recently tilled and #illegalmining on the #tailings...) ➡ And, did they provide health assessments given the ground water was polluted by heavy metals? Well, then came THAT e-mail that we were unintentionally copied on. Followed by a request for a phone conversation. I had the call. I listened. And I asked the same questions. Their response: lots of promises to send over information (still waiting on this, BTW), blame shifting, play of ignorance around who the sale was made to, and indicating that the only real impact of the high manganese contamination in the ground #water was "bad tasting water." I expected most of those responses... BUT... "BAD TASTING WATER" !? I have enough understanding to know the #manganese, along with other #heavymetals,  can have severe effects on the brain and nervous system. Cognitive impairment. Memory loss. Peripheral neuropathy. Parkinson's-like symptoms. So again, why weren't health assessments provided? Especially to those families who were settled there for decades whilst their ground and surface #water were highly contaminated? And WHY were they only resettled at the point of sale? I share this because as an industry, we have made tremendous progress. And there are many organizations who are leading the change; inspiring others to rethink what it means to be #responsible. But then there are companies like this one. Who fail us. Who fail communities. And who fail the world. (side note: they are also one of the very few tier 1 companies who are NOT an ICMM member). HERE IS WHAT WE MUST CONFRONT AS LEADERS: ▶ When leaders do not abide by the international standards, we are left with a world that values the paper on which laws are written more than the lives of those they were written to protect. The failure to enact international standards anywhere is a failure to enact it everywhere. Period. ◀

➖Can you walk away from long-dated closure and environmental liabilities as a tier 1 mining company? ➖Can you sell off your responsibility? ➖And if so, under what circumstances? I can’t help but wonder how many companies are willing to disclose the details of transactions that involve selling off long-dated closure and environmental liabilities. Just wondering…what will pass the front page of The New York Times test? What do you think? 💬👇🏼 Pictured: reminisce of an abandoned open pit in a community we are doing work in, where a young boy drowned recently. Repost and share to create the conversations that are needed in our industry. #responsiblemining #sustainability #CSR #community #environment #closureliability #mining #africa

Following a drought that devastated agriculture and pushed millions of Zambians into food insecurity, Makor Resources and Jubilee Metals Limited partner to support the government’s existing efforts in providing agricultural inputs to subsistence farmers. The beneficiary farmers of this collaborative effort between Makor Resources, Jubilee Metals Zambia and the local government included elders, the physically disabled and widowed women who rely on agricultural production. We will also scale this distribution program to the rural communities surround the Munkoyo Mine in Kapiri Mposhi later this month.
