Here are just a few reasons why:   ✅ 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗡𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴: Underground mines have complex networks of tunnels, shafts, and stopes. Geospatial data management helps create accurate 3D models of the mine, enabling precise navigation and mapping. ✅ 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Geospatial data management allows for the integration of various data sources, such as geological, geotechnical, and production data. This enables mine planners to optimise resource allocation, reduce waste, and improve overall efficiency. ✅ 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Geospatial data management helps identify potential hazards, such as rockfalls, gas accumulations, or water ingress. By analysing and visualising geospatial data, mines can better manage risks and ensure a safer working environment. ✅ 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Geospatial data management is essential for creating digital twins of underground mines. These digital replicas enable simulation, prediction, and optimisation of mining operations, reducing the need for physical prototyping and testing.   Mandela Mining Precinct's #RTIMS programme has engaged with technology partner Esri South Africa on their #ArcGIS platform, a comprehensive geospatial platform for geographic information system (GIS) technology.   Built by Esri, ArcGIS integrates and connects data through the context of geography. The Minerals Council South Africa CEO, Mzila Mthenjane, recently attended the Mandela Mining Precinct Showcase Day, focusing on "Integrating Research Excellence with Mining Innovation.   In his speech, he emphasised that RD&I is in the DNA of the Minerals Council. The collaboration between the private and public sectors—represented by the Minerals Council, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), and the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation through the MMP—is both deliberate and intentional. This partnership aims to advance South Africa's mining and minerals industry, which is poised for growth thanks to initiatives like Operation Vulindlela 2.0. These efforts are revitalising our energy, water, and logistics infrastructure while tackling crime and corruption, paving the way for investment opportunities in critical minerals essential for the global energy transition to a low-carbon future.   We're also witnessing a positive shift in citizen and market sentiment with the formation of the GNU, reigniting constructive interest in our country.   A big thank you to Mr Mmboneni Muofhe, Dr Thulani Dlamini, Cert. On Monday, 18 November 2024, I delivered an address at the 2024 Mining Technology and Innovation Showcase event held at the CSIR International Convention Centre under the theme: “Accelerating Mining RDI: Integrating Research Excellence with Mining Innovation.” Looking at the diversity of topics, technologies and innovations that were covered in the program, one is left with a feeling that the South African Mining sector is not a sunset industry, but an industry that is going through a process of renewal, repositioning and growth. This is so that we can take advantage of the opportunities presented to this sector – such as that of critical minerals for the energy transition, but also to address challenges brought about by the ever-increasing complexity of mining operations. South Africa has three natural resources that differentiate us from the rest of the world - our abundant sunshine and wind that positions us very strongly for the generation of renewal energy to transition to a green economy; our human resources, particular the potential of the so-called youth dividend that can spur economic growth and transformation; and lastly our natural resources including coal. If we are to create a stable and sustainable economy, we have the ensure that we build it on the back of these three critical endowments. The CSIR’s 80-year history is a history of innovation to support industrial development and the development of a capable state. We have strategically chosen to focus on mining as one of our key areas, establishing ourselves as a trusted partner to both the industry and the state, supporting the development of a sustainable mining industry. We take pride in being part of this ecosystem, notably by hosting the Mandela Mining Precinct and through our contribution to research, development and innovation efforts that support modernising and optimising mining practices, as well as creating safer, more sustainable mining operations. Congratulations to the Mandela Mining Precinct for organising such an impactful event and for being a driving force behind this important conversation.
