  • As we usher in the last month of the year, perhaps your dreams have stretched you beyond your visual line of sight. You might have needed a visual observer to carry out your extended visual line of sight missions or taken short-term goals to keep your visual line of sight. However way you have looked at 2024, we hope you have had a safe landing in December and are looking forward to better things ahead. Understanding Drone Operation: #VLOS, #EVLOS and #BVLOS At Ntsu Drone Academy, it's important to understand the different types of drone operation ratings, each catering to specific operational needs and safety requirements. Here’s a breakdown of VLOS, EVLOS and BVLOS: #VLOS (#VisualLineOfSight) Meaning: VLOS operations require the remote pilot to maintain direct visual contact with the drone at all times during the flight. This ensures the pilot can monitor the drone's position, respond to emergencies, and avoid obstacles. #EVLOS (#ExtendedVisualLineOfSight) Meaning: EVLOS allows for operations where the pilot uses visual observers to maintain contact with the drone beyond the pilot's direct line of sight. Visual observers are positioned to relay information to the pilot. #BVLOS (#BeyondVisualLineOfSight) Meaning: BVLOS operations allow the pilot to operate the drone without maintaining direct visual contact. This enables long-distance and complex missions, relying on advanced technology for navigation and obstacle detection. Achieving These Ratings #Training and #Certification: Each rating requires specific theoretical and practical training. Pilots must complete courses designed for VLOS, EVLOS and BVLOS operations. Skills Test: After training, pilots must pass a skills test to demonstrate their proficiency and understanding of the operational requirements. Regulatory Approval: Pilots must meet the requirements set by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) to obtain these ratings. These ratings expand the possibilities for drone operations, allowing pilots to undertake a wider range of missions safely and effectively At Ntsu Aviation, we offer comprehensive training programs to help you achieve these ratings and advance your drone piloting skills. #NtsuDroneAcademy #NtsuAviationSolution #NtsuAviationTechnologies #TheDroneSpecialists

When Sam Twala, Queen Ndlovu, PhD(c), and Kim James share a stage, it’s not just an exchange of ideas—it's a #masterclass in #leadership, #innovation, and the occasional dose of #humor. As the session began, Sam Twala, CEO of Ntsu Aviation Solutions (Pty) Ltd, with his calm and composed demeanor, shared insights on how the aviation industry can keep up to date with regulations and compliance to ensure safety in the skies and immediate efficient rescue on the ground. "Remember," he said with a twinkle in his eye, "drones aren't just for delivering packages; they can deliver careers too!" Queen Ndlovu, PhD(c), the dynamic CEO of QP Drone Tech, followed with her characteristic energy. She passionately discussed the innovative projects her company has been working on and the importance of empowering communities through technology. "At QP Drone Tech, we believe in lifting as we rise," she said, her enthusiasm infectious. "And if a drone can lift a 5kg payload, imagine what it can do for someone's future!" Kim James, the director of UAV Aerial Works, rounded out the trio with her authoritative presence. She delved into the regulatory landscape and the strides needed to ensure drones are safe and effective. "As I always say, the sky's the limit, unless you're a drone—then it's just the beginning!" The interaction between Sam, Queen, and Kim was a highlight of the conference. Their mutual respect and camaraderie were evident, and they played off each other's strengths seamlessly. Together their practical approach, visionary ideas, and regulatory insights created a balanced and engaging discussion. At one point, Queen nudged Sam playfully and said, "If only all our drones could be as calm and steady as you, Sam!" The audience erupted in laughter, appreciating the light-hearted moment amid the serious discussion. As the conference commences the audience is captivated with more than just notes and handouts, they carry with them a renewed sense of purpose, inspired by the collaboration and unity demonstrated by these leaders. The conference is a testament to the power of networking and collaboration in pushing the boundaries of the drone industry in South Africa. #Drones #DisasterAndRiskManagement #NtsuAviationSolutions #Innovation #NtsuDroneAcademy #NtsuAviationTechnologies #TheDroneSpecialists

  • #Mzansi, What Are We Doing to Our Kids? Mzansi, have we forgotten to celebrate our future on #ChildrensDay, which was on #NovemberTheSecond? Are we neglecting to cherish the ones we have by reinforcing education and good morals? Is it that we've stopped modelling good behavior, and now our kids are demotivated, going astray, and smoking nyaope right in front of us? Will our children know how to make good choices when we party with them, giving them the allowance of public drinking and funding those social welfare drinks instead of their education? Mzansi, what are we doing to our children? Are we forgetting them or ignoring them, hoping they don't turn out like us? We celebrate every other public holiday, but when was the last time we truly served our children on Children's Day, a day meant to affirm our pride in them? The day passes without us even acknowledging them. Tsogang Mzansi, what are we doing to our kids? Let's reflect on our actions, let's be the change we want to see. Sisonke, we can make a difference. Let’s uplift our children, guide them right, and ensure they know they are our pride and future. Closing the Conference with a bang❗️ The 2nd Day of our Conference and Workshop themed Drones, AI and GIS in Disaster Risk Management ( DRM) was marked by insightful panel discussions coupled with some key note addresses. Thanks to our drone regulation guru Sam Twala who chaired the Regulatory Panel with some interesting discussions including the conversation of who really takes charge of the air space when disaster strikes amongst others . Our gratitude goes to Lobang Thabantso who represented SACAA by sharing critical perspectives. The delegates also had the liberty of taking in from the insights of Clinton Heimann from The National Department of Land Reform and Rural Development on how a National Government Drone Program Pivoted from Land Management to Disaster Relief and Resilience Amidst Climate Change during the National, Provincial and Local Gov DRM panel. Thanks to our divine Thembinkosi Nxawe who chaired the panel. It was refreshing to take in Flying Labs in the Southern Region and expertise Hub Nigeria Flying Labs , Nepal Flying Labs ,South Africa Flying Labs , Zimbabwe Flying Labs , Zambia Flying Labs , Botswana Flying Labs and Tanzania Flying Labs to share their use cases. Mr Gcinimuzi Obed Radebe facilitated the engagement so gracefully as a Chair of the panel. It wouldn’t be a drone conference without the drone chick 🐥 herself Kim James for not only was she part of the Regulatory panel she equally chaired the Inclusivity, Gender and Equity panel so splendidly . The young panelists didn’t leave any stone unturned Boipelo Moraka Earl Ratema , Kenneth Ramah and Itumeleng Ngwatwane by highlighting what they offer within the DRM space and their pains and gains. Our warmest appreciation goes to Karsten Robbins from Wingtra who shared how they have been using their colorful orange drones in DRM to cover larger areas within a blink of an eye. Our heartfelt gratitude goes to Transport Education Training Authority Mr Lesito for engaging the Conference on how their Seta became one of the first training authority in South Africa to adopt drone technology and train the young people and lessors learned. The co- creation sessions facilitated by our smart Olivier Cottray -Esri and Sonja Betschart -WeRobotics brought all the perspectives from the individuals to tabulate their recommendations and the way forward. We can’t wait to share the document to the delegates and other critical stakeholders within the DRM space. The delegates continued to enjoy to hear from Dexter Tangocci and Spencer Horne on how their innovations are used to prepare and for responding to disasters. Can’t wait to share the interesting DEMOs for my next Day 3 and 4 post …. Of course our drone tycoon Jack Shilubane from QP Drone Tech and South Africa Flying Labs closed the Conference with by expressing a word of gratitude to everyone🙏 #climatesmart #qpdronetech #southafricaflyinglabs #WeRobotics #esri #thedrone👑

  • #Incident vs. #Accident in #DroneAviation: In drone aviation, understanding the difference between an incident and an accident is crucial for #safety and #regulatory #compliance. Here’s a brief explanation to help illustrate the concept: Incident: An incident is an event that could affect the safety of operations but does not result in significant damage or injury. These are usually minor and can often be resolved without drastic measures. Example: A drone experiences a temporary loss of signal and begins to drift slightly off its intended path. The operator quickly regains control and brings the drone back on course without any damage or injury. Key Characteristics of an Incident: - No significant damage to the drone. - No injuries to people or animals. - Operations may be momentarily disrupted but quickly restored. An opportunity to learn and improve safety measures. Accident: An accident involves substantial damage or harm, either to the drone, property, or people. These are more serious and often lead to investigations to understand and prevent future occurrences. Example: A drone loses power mid-flight and crashes into a parked car, causing visible damage to both the car and the drone. If there were people around, there could also be potential for injuries. Key Characteristics of an Accident: - Significant damage to the drone or other property. - Potential for injuries or fatalities. - Requires a detailed investigation. May lead to changes in operational practices or regulations. In summary, incidents are less severe and more about near-misses or minor malfunctions, while accidents have tangible negative consequences that require intervention and sometimes result in changes to ensure they don't happen again. #OnlineTraining loading but for now enjoy our Monday lessons here and please don't forget to subscribe to our newsletter https://lnkd.in/dj-2A9Fn And for all your drone maintenance, we've got you covered also https://lnkd.in/d-GbUm4p #NtsuDroneAcademy #NtsuAviationSolutions #NtsuAviationTechnologies #NtsuDroneLogBook #TheDroneSpecialists Image obtained from www.coverdrone.com
