About us

About The WRG contributes to the scientific understanding of ecological processes of aquatic ecosystems on a regional and international scale The WRG aims to provide cost-effective aquatic research and consulting services to the private and government sectors. The WRG prioritises the capacity building of postgraduate students from NWU and thereby promotes the involvement of postgraduate students in the practical aspects of all projects. General Information The WRG consists of Professors Nico Smit, Victor Wepener, Corrie Wolmarans and their team of specialist aquatic biologists and ecologists based at the Unit for Environmental Science and Management at the North West University in Potchefstroom. The WRG has more than 100 years of combined experience in the fields of aquatic health, aquatic ecology and ecotoxicology. They have completed projects for governments and numerous private sector organisations in South Africa, Africa and abroad. The areas of specialisation of the members of the group include; aquatic, estuarine and marine ecology, aquatic, estuarine and marine ecotoxicology, aquatic ecosystem management, risk management, marine parasitology, fish biology and inland fisheries management. In addition to the core areas of specialisation of the WRG an extensive local (NWU), national and international network of specialists is utilised to complement the services that the WRG can present.
