A SANS 10400-XA assessment is based on not one, but two buildings – your actual construction or refurbishment project, and a reference building for comparison purposes. In order to comply with the regulatory requirement, the actual building model must consistently outperform the reference building model. This is in addition to meeting the applicable SANS standards (these vary depending on the type and size of the building, and the specific climatic zone it is located within). When you engage with Q-Mech Consulting Engineers as your SANS 10400-XA assessment partner, you can count on receiving a comprehensive SANS 10400-XA report for submission to the local council – a vital step on your journey to obtaining the necessary building rights. We live in a world where data is becoming ever-more important – statistics on the performance of systems like HVAC solutions allow us to predict trends, anticipate issues, and derive actionable insights. Historical data allows for increased accuracy in terms of demand planning and determining the specifications of replacement systems or upgrades, while data analysis can help with scheduling preventative maintenance that can extend the lifespan of existing systems and reduce the total cost of ownership. Performance data can also be used to finetune operating parameters for a more cost-effective and sustainable approach to HVAC use. At Q-Mech Consulting Engineers, we instinctively understand the value and utility of data – and we can help you make sense of yours. To learn more, email info@qmech.co.za today. Image credit: sortino

Summer can be a challenging time for allergy sufferers, with a greatly increased load of pollen, dust and other allergens present in the air. HVAC systems can play a vital role in purifying the air and preventing contamination of inside spaces, but it’s important to ensure that system components are working optimally so as to offer maximum relief. This includes replacing filter elements, dusting air vents to remove accumulated debris and cleaning your HVAC system’s air ducts. It’s also important to monitor the humidity levels in your buildings – if the air is too dry, allergens will circulate more freely. As temperatures rise, it may be tempting to open windows – but keeping them closed and relying on air conditioning instead will help to reduce the number of allergen particles coming in from outside. Pollution is a concern for people in all environments, but one form that is often overlooked is noise pollution – even though it can have severe consequences. These can include reduced productivity, fatigue and general unhappiness. Incorrectly designed, installed or maintained HVAC systems can be a major source of excess noise, and contribute to dissatisfaction amongst workers, tenants and visitors. We can advise on noise reduction strategies for both existing and planned HVAC installations, through the use of improved sound insulation, more efficient motors, and advanced blade designs that move more air but in a quieter way. Our noise control expertise extends to being able to recommend vibration isolation and duct lining materials that can assist in making your systems even quieter. No two people are the same – everyone has their own idea of what the ideal ambient temperature and humidity level should be. Equally, different parts of your premises may require different temperatures depending on what they are used for, whether it’s manufacturing or storage of perishable items. Advances in the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence mean that smart HVAC systems can learn and adapt to changing circumstances, and make the necessary adjustments without the need for human intervention. Zonal cooling technology recognises that a more flexible approach to HVAC and cooling is a more intelligent way to help everybody keep their cool. To learn more, email info@qmech.co.za today. Like all systems – especially those that are ‘out of sight, out of mind’ and placed high up or outside – HVAC installations can get overlooked when it comes to maintenance. Until, that is, things start to go wrong and performance dips. In systems that have not been adequately maintained, this is most likely when your HVAC is working its hardest during periods of particularly hot weather. At Q-Mech, we focus on designing installations that are more accessible and easier to maintain, and that incorporate smart sensors that can flag potential issues before they become problems. Predictive maintenance can save you time, money and hassle – it’s the smarter way to manage your HVAC installations. To learn more, email info@qmech.co.za today. Image credit: DZHA

Geothermal technology has the potential to contribute to effective heating and cooling solutions. While the technology is still not widespread, it does offer potential cost savings as well as sustainability benefits. Innovations such as closed-loop geothermal heat pump systems take advantage of seasonal differences in temperature between the air and the ground to cool pumped water during summer or warm it during winter. While the relatively mild climate here in South Africa does not automatically lend itself to exploiting the cooling or heating potential of geothermal energy, the improved efficiency of the latest innovations make it more viable, with water-to-water sourced pumping systems starting to appear alongside more conventional air-to-water sourced heat pumps. At Q-Mech Consulting Engineers, we consistently keep our finger on the pulse of the latest HVAC options, including geothermal technologies that rely on the constant temperature of the earth as an exchange medium and offer benefits in terms of noise reduction, longevity and lighter maintenance burdens.
