Can Cities in East Africa Achieve Zero-Waste? An entrepreneurial partnership between TakaTaka Solutions and Chanzi Ltd is demonstrating an innovative and value-adding model for waste management. Chanzi is leading the scaling of the model from Kenya to Tanzania, proving its efficacy and impact for waste management and upscaling. Over the past 18 months, the partnership has piloted an integrated waste management system in Nairobi that processes >90% of municipal waste. The model includes sorting, recycling, composting, and innovative Black Soldier Fly (BSF) farming and biochar production. Under SMEP, an additional pilot is underway in Mombasa. Following the success of the partnership, Chanzi replicated the approach in Arusha, Tanzania, establishing Okota Waste Management as an aggregator. Within just 6 months of operation, 13% of the city’s landfill-bound waste has been diverted! Key milestones include: 👏 Processing over 40MT/day of municipal waste in Arusha. 💸 Creating 66 full-time jobs. 🪰 Scaling BSF farming to combat organic waste, producing 10MT/month of insect protein. ♻️ Developing solutions for hard-to-recycle plastics, like converting multilayered plastics into building materials. Andrew Wallace, co-founder of Chanzi, estimates that expanding this model to 11 additional cities in Tanzania will need $12.25M in funding. This would service 5 million citizens. We believe the economics of this model (relative to waste-to-energy, for example) show favourable potential not just commercially but in terms of economic and social value, while alleviating pressure on landfills and supporting environmental sustainability. The model can scale incrementally, which allows for phased investment. We welcome you to read more about this transformative project and how it’s redefining waste management in East Africa.
