Star Nurse Educator join hands with HealthSpace EHR & Practice Management to fight Diabetes: Approximately one in nine South African adults have diabetes, totalling around 4.2 million individuals. Diabetes is also the leading cause of death among women in the country. For poorly managed patients, diabetes can lead to severe health complications, such as nerve damage, kidney issues, heart disease, stroke, vision impairment and mental health disorders. Most South Africans with diabetes are either diagnosed very late, by which time they are much sicker, or are not diagnosed at all. The SA Demographic Health Survey data from 2016, the most recent study, found that 67% of all men and women were “pre-diabetic” and suggested that a “large portion” of South Africans remained undiagnosed, and therefore untreated. If all we had to do was lower blood glucose levels in everyone with the disease, the answer would be clear-cut and simple. But when we begin to consider the risk of hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar), the side effects of medications, and the uncertainties of “adherence to treatment,” decision-making becomes more difficult. Now add hypertension, dyslipidaemia, and obesity, many or all of which are found in most people with diabetes, and the treatment options become even more complex. Next add age, race, gender, duration of disease, life expectancy, quality of life, comorbid conditions, and all of their treatments, and you’ve got yourself, well, a very complex clinical problem.
