I'm thrilled to share that my team emerged victorious in our very first moot competition! Registered in October 2023, we were among 230 teams that entered this robust contest. Our journey began with drafting heads of arguments and supplementary heads for an urgent appeal. We then advanced through virtual rounds, presenting our oral arguments with passion and precision. The competition intensified as we reached the semi-finals held at the prestigious Constitutional Court in Johannesburg, where we secured our place in the finals. The finals were a culmination of hard work and dedication, and I am proud to announce that we won! Additionally, I was recognized as one of the best oralists - a testament to the collective effort and individual growth. I am incredibly grateful to my teammates, Frances Lancaster and Farisai Jaka for their relentless spirit and strong will. Over the past six months, our friendship and teamwork flourished; we learned to share our positions respectfully and collaborate effectively, helping each other strengthen our arguments with objective solutions. I am incredibly honoured to be surrounded by such great legal minds. We were not the only UCT team that made it to the semifinals! As such I’d like to extend a massive congratulations to Hlumani Ndlovu , Luyanda Mtembu and Ropafadzo Zharare for their rigour and impressive performance! A huge thank you to our coaches, Art Wynberg and daniel robert erasmus , who were instrumental in our journey from novices to champions. Their intentional mentoring pushed us to excel beyond our limits. Lastly, I appreciate CALS and SLS ( Prosper Dumani, Boitumelo Sekgala and Thuli Zulu) for organizing this competition, which not only honed our argumentation skills through masterclasses but also provided invaluable networking opportunities. This experience has been transformative, and I am eager to apply these refined skills in my legal career. Thank you to everyone who supported us on this journey!

We pleased the Court! 🤭 This weekend, Tadiwanashe Magadzire, Frances Lancaster and I came first in the Public Interest Law Moot Competition held at the Constitutional Court! 💃🏾 We entered this competition in October 2023 with the simple intention of putting ourselves out there and trying something new. Little did we know, we had signed up for one of the most challenging and rigorous experiences thus far in our Law degree. This nationwide inter-university competition, hosted by the Student Litigation Society NPC and the Centre for Applied Legal Studies, started off with over 200 registered teams from all over the country! With plenty hard work and thorough coaching from Art Wynberg and daniel robert erasmus, we made it from the Top 75 teams all the way down to the Top 4 teams, with each round consisting of either written submissions or online oral submissions. We came first in the Semi-Finals held at the Constitutional Court, and the following day, we were crowned the Moot Competition Winners after an intense Final round! I was also awarded Second Best Oralist in the Competition. To my teammates Tadiwanashe Magadzire and Frances Lancaster - I am beyond proud of you and your growth over the last few months. I wouldn’t have done this with anyone else! ❤️ To our coaches Art Wynberg and daniel robert erasmus - You somehow took us from barely knowing the first thing about a moot competition to coming first in the country. I cannot thank you enough 🙏🏾 To our fellow UCT students who competed in the competition Hlumani Ndlovu, Luyanda Mtembu, Ropafadzo Zharare, Meli Xulu, Qhawe Mkebe, Joe Clacey and Justin Uys - Iron certainly sharpened iron. Thank you all for making this such a memorable experience, and congratulations making it so far into the competition! And finally, to the hosts and organisers of the competition Student Litigation Society NPC and the Centre for Applied Legal Studies - Thank you for making such an opportunity available to Law students. You are doing incredible work.

A rewarding weekend was just had. Two UCT teams — coached by Art Wynberg and I — argued in the Constitutional Court in the final round of the Public Interest Law Moot Competition. The competition was strong, and the overall results of the competition (from 240 registered teams) were as follows: • 1st place: University of Cape Town — Farisai Jaka, Tadiwanashe Magadzire, and Frances Lancaster • 2nd place: University of the Witwatersrand • 3rd place: UCT — Hlumani Ndlovu, Luyanda Mtembu, and Ropafadzo Zharare • 4th place: University of Fort Hare It was a special experience for the teams, and the hard work put in through our many practices with them paid off. In the top 6 best speaker awards, the UCT participants placed 2nd–5th (Farisai Jaka - 2nd, Hlumani Ndlovu - 3rd, Ropafadzo Zharare - 4th, and Tadiwanashe Magadzire - 5th). What makes the results even more special was that the winning team had never mooted before this competition — their first in-person arguments were delivered in the Constitutional Court. In addition, we had two other teams participating (Joe Clacey and Justin Uys; Qhawe Mkebe and Meli Xulu) who progressed to the round of 16. This is an achievement itself. Thanks to the organisers, the Centre for Applied Legal Studies and the Student Litigation Society NPC. You have provided a special opportunity to students to find joy in advocacy. May the competition only improve going forward! And special thanks to UCT Law and the Centre for Law and Society for covering our travel and accommodation expenses. To all the UCT teams, you have grown so much. We are proud of you.

Team PIL 47, comprised of myself, Njabulo Thibedi , and Sandas Madziva, from the University of Fort Hare had the honor of being among the top 4 teams out of 230 in the 2024 Public Interest Law Moot Court Competition. Additionally, I am grateful to have been ranked among the top 6 best oralists. The competition commenced in November of the previous year with the submission of our heads of argument, which determined our qualification among the national top 32 teams. Following this, we submitted supplementary heads of argument in February 2024, securing our place in the top 16. Subsequently, we engaged in rigorous virtual oral rounds, leading us to the semi-finals held at the Constitutional Court of South Africa on April 20th and 21st, 2024. I extend my heartfelt appreciation to Student Litigation Society NPC and Centre for Applied Legal Studies for organizing and facilitating this invaluable learning experience, as well as to our coaches, Proffessor Arthur van Coller and Dr Ntandokayise Ndlovu (LL.D) for their unwavering dedication. Lastly, we are grateful for the support provided by the university throughout this journey.

Happy to share that my team PIL47 qualified for the Top 32 of the 2023/2024 Public Interest Moot Competition. This competition is organised by the Student Litigation Society NPC and Center for Applied Arts and open to all South African Universities. We will be representing University of Fort Hare and the Nelson R Mandela Faculty of Law. It takes two to tangle. I appreciate my teammates Njabulo Thibedi and Previous Patience Mufunganzira for their resilience and determination. Not forgetting Cathrine Ashley Makwara who assisted us with drafting our pleadings.
