Empowering long and short term decision making at regional, farm and field level in the context of climate change
About us
Climate projections for the future suggest favourable conditions for some agricultural producing regions, but challenging conditions for others. For instance, temperature increases are likely to shift plant phenology, ripening and harvest dates, and potentially affect quality and yield. The commercial value of accurate and up-to-date climate data emerged from feedback received in response to a series of demonstrations to the wine and fruit industries. TerraClim combines high resolution terrain data with weather station data (sourced from several data providers) to model climatic conditions within an orchard or vineyard. The TerraClim climate database allows for dynamic mapping, statistical interrogation, data mining, machine learning and climate change analysis over time and space. Seasonal management is possible today with the new decision making tool TerraClim, that provides climate and terrain information to farm and field level to improve long and short term decision making in the context of climate change specific to a region and cultivar specific physiology.

"Sunny days are the worst," says Asavela from Imizamo Yethu, where residents face unbearable heat and life-threatening health risks due to climate change. From corrugated metal roofs radiating intense heat to sleepless nights in sweltering conditions, these stories highlight the urgent need for action. Experts, like Tara Southey (PhD), Founder & CEO of TerraClim, are advocating for solutions such as insulated roofs, community gardens and the importance of planting trees to combat extreme weather conditions. Vegetation not only provides shade but also cools the air and stabilises the environment. 🌳 Let’s amplify these voices and work together to implement sustainable, climate-resilient solutions in our communities. 📖 Swipe through the post to learn more and read the full Health for Mzansi article written by Vateka Halile here: https://lnkd.in/dfqnwNMF 💬 How can businesses, governments and communities collaborate to protect vulnerable groups from the impacts of climate change? The thing is, weather stations are kind of a big deal when it comes to understanding climate and terrain. Especially in an environment as diverse and dynamic as South Africa. More often than not, satellite data alone simply doesn’t cut it- there are so many configurations and variables to take into account when using satellite data exclusively. In some cases, one may actually increase risk, rather than reduce it. We find real insights on the ground level by observing real time, hourly updates to provide our users with verified, valuable, local data. And that’s the difference.

Updated: The TerraClim team has been tracking the powerful winds sweeping across the Western Cape over the past two days, with gusts reaching up to 80 km/h in some areas! Our latest wind speed map for August 26th and 27th captures the intensity and spread of these winds as they continue to impact the region. These strong winds, coupled with ongoing heavy rains, create hazardous conditions for coastal communities and inland areas alike. Safety first, always!

The TerraClim team has been closely monitoring the intense rainfall across the Western Cape over the past two days, and it’s not over yet! Our latest rainfall map for August 26th and 27th shows significant precipitation levels across the region, with some areas experiencing heavy downpours of over 50 mm in just 24 hours. As the rain continues, we are reminded of both the beauty and power of nature. While the much-needed rain helps replenish our dams and sustain our agriculture, it also brings challenges, such as localised flooding and difficult travel conditions. Stay safe out there, especially if you’re in flood-prone or low-lying areas. Keep an eye on local alerts and remember that even small amounts of rain can lead to hazardous conditions. Let’s all stay informed and prepared. Follow us for more real-time updates and detailed weather insights from the TerraClim team!
