In 2025, we've introduced #AurumWeeklyPublicationUpdate to keep you up to date with the latest research contributions from Aurum's experts. This week, we are excited to share a groundbreaking qualitative study led by Aurum’s team, including Dr Lucy Andere Chimoyi, PhD, Ms Pretty Ndini, Mr Matthew Oladimeji, Mr Nieser Sean Seatlholo, Ms Kudzai Hazel Mawokomatanda, Prof Salome Charalambous and Prof Geoff Setswe. The study explores the syndemic interaction between social, environmental, and structural contexts of HIV infection in peri-mining areas in South Africa, offering crucial insights into the factors influencing HIV transmission in these communities. The study, which utilised mixed qualitative methods such as in-depth interviews (IDIs) and focus group discussions (FGDs), revealed four key socio-behavioural factors associated with HIV acquisition in peri-mining areas: migrancy, alcohol and substance use, commercial and transactional sex, and limited uptake of HIV prevention services. Every Wednesday here on LinkedIn and X, explore our timeline for "Your Weekly Window into Aurum’s Research Contributions." This week, we're excited to highlight research published in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology, where Aurum’s Dr. Lucy Andere Chimoyi, PhD, Prof. Geoff Setswe, Mr Matthew Oladimeji and other global experts collaborated to assess the plasma separation card (PSC) for HIV-1 viral load monitoring. This multi-site, cross-sectional study involved 538 patients across 10 primary healthcare clinics in South Africa, comparing PSC samples with the standard EDTA plasma diagnostics. It’s important to note that the findings from this manuscript emphasise the reliability of the plasma separation card (PSC), a novel diagnostic method that can be implemented in healthcare facilities in resource-constrained settings. The agreement between the PSC and the standard of care EDTA plasma for viral load monitoring is high. Given the high specificity of these tests, we recommend scaling up the use of PSC in South Africa for diagnosing treatment failure. Locally Led, Globally Read. Tuberculosis (TB) is the leading cause of death from a single infectious agent. The burden is highest in some low- and middle-income countries. One-quarter of the world’s population is estimated to have been infected with TB, which is the seedbed for progressing from TB infection to the deadly and contagious disease itself. In a major stride toward ending the TB epidemic, new rifapentine-based Tuberculosis Preventive Treatment (TPT) formulations have been developed, with costs radically reduced and innovative delivery models introduced. Scaling up TPT, particularly regimens with optimal target product profile characteristics, has the potential to make a significant impact on global health. The latest review on #TBPreventiveTreatment, authored by Aurum Institute's Prof. Violet Nyasha Chihota, Prof. Gavin Churchyard, Ms. Makaita Gombe, and other global TB experts, has been published in Springer Nature Drugs Journal. This research is a powerful call for innovation and collaboration to scale up TPT and move closer to ending the TB epidemic. 📖 Read here: https://lnkd.in/dY-XMBN6 #LocallyLed #GlobalHealth #ResearchImpact #TPT #GloballyImpactful
