The Ocean Advocate is here to inform, inspire and empower all people with facts about South African seas, ocean news, marine organisations, jobs and courses. It's built on the idea that when we learn about something, we're more likely to care for it. And there's so much to learn about the ocean. The endeavour is about collaboration and open-source information, founded on the belief that every one of us can make a difference, especially if we work together. ⛔🌊 BREAKING OCEAN NEWS: New offshore drilling has been BANNED off most U.S. coasts! ICYMI, President Biden announced on January 6 that 625 MILLION acres of ocean will be safeguarded from future offshore oil & gas leasing along the entire U.S. East Coast, the eastern Gulf of Mexico, the West Coast, and portions of the Northern Bering Sea in Alaska. His eleventh-hour executive action “prevents consideration of withdrawn areas for any future oil or natural gas leasing for purposes of exploration, development, or production.” These protections have the immense potential to defend critical marine and coastal environments, climate-vulnerable coastal communities, and wildlife. This major policy win for the ocean aims to also expedite the development of vital renewable energy infrastructure and projects, and accelerate the transition to a clean energy economy. By banning new leasing contracts, this action will prevent future fossil fuel projects from taking place in the protected regions. This is a great example of the urgent and decisive action we need from global leaders to protect the ocean—our greatest ally in the swiftly intensifying climate crisis. According to a 2024 Oceana poll, two-thirds of American voters want elected officials to prevent new offshore drilling, and 70% of young people feel particularly strongly about protecting the coasts. Despite this seeming consensus, incoming President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to revoke this historic ban “on day one” of his administration. However, his ability to do this quickly or easily is being questioned. A provision of the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act of 1953 allows the current President to implement such a ban to protect certain areas of the Outer Continental Shelf from the threat of offshore oil and gas drilling. Translation? Only Congress has the power to revoke this action. Ultimately, this unprecedented act of ocean protection and broad public support is a testament to the growing recognition of the importance of the ocean in healing our planet. ♻️ Repost to share the historic news! P.S. President Biden is credited with conserving 670 million acres of land and ocean during his term in office—more than any other president in history. (Video courtesy of Philip Thurston)

There are ideas below that would be far better for the planet in the year ahead than some of us trying to shed some of the holiday weight! For me included 😅 And in reality, there’s no reason not to do both.
As you finalize your New Year’s resolutions, vision boards and bingo cards, we ask that you make nature one of your top priorities. Our planet is facing enormous challenges, but together, we have the power (and the responsibility!) to take action and protect our environment. How will you make a difference for nature this year? Swipe to read some of our suggestions, and share your ideas in the comments!

Frogfish are fascinating and so tricky to spot underwater that you're treated like a hero if you find one. But this juvenile...it's ridiculously gorgeous and wins all the prizes, imho! #theoceanadvocate #oceanconservation #oceanliteracy #learnaboutitloveitlookafterit #OceanDecade #Vision2030 #oceanscience
#SundaySpecies: this cute little fish, a juvenile frogfish, is going to grow up to be a camouflage master! Frogfish live in coral reefs in the Indo-Pacific region, and have developed the ability to change their color and pattern depending on their surroundings, making them nearly invisible to both their predators and preys. 🎥 IG: jacobguy.media

Useful for students and people trying to help students.
ICYMI, after getting tired of seeing heartbreaking posts in the marine biology professional advice facebook groups, I made an exercise for my students. It lets them learn what jobs are actually like, what skills they require, and how much they pay. Here I share it with you, the people. https://lnkd.in/epd8r7mp

Very true. And connection endures despite space and time. We're all part of one giant web. It's ours to nurture. It's a hard and difficult path. But the awesome part? So many more people are choosing nurture. 💙

Always remember that everything is connected 🍄 Through soil, but also through air and action Plants 'talk' to each other via intricate fungal networks we call mycorrhizal fungi. They exchange nutrients and send signals to each other, warning them for potential danger. This is called the wood wide web. 💦 A plant root can also make its root 100x longer thanks to these fungal root extensions. So, do we really have a drought problem? Or have a fungal deficiency? If you know this, using fungicides makes no sense. 👉🏼 Learning more about this always reminds me of human connections as well. Alone you can't get very far. If we connect with each other, we can achieve near-impossible dreams. And this happens on a very deep level, but also in everyday life. Every time you buy bread in a bakery, dozens of people contribute to making that possible. If you take a train, thousands of people did important things that led to this train riding through the landscape. If you realize this, it doesn't make sense to spread negativity or anger to anyone you might meet since they are part of your network, too. And what you do to your network, you do to yourself. #regenerative #landscapedesign #landscapearchitecture #agroecology #regenerativefarming #agroforestry #farming #tuin #permaculture #voedselbos #nature #climate #health #gutmicrobiome #guthealth

At this time of year it "is a reminder, not bound by religion or belief, but by the universal truth that love is the greatest gift we can give and receive. In this season, we pause to remember the beauty of caring, of giving, and of holding each other in the light of kindness. This is the true essence of the holiday—the love that flows from our hearts to others, creating a ripple of hope and connection. This love is not confined to a single day or season. It is a power that transcends time, a miracle that envelops the earth and radiates from the core of our being. It cannot be stopped, diminished, or extinguished. Love continues to guide us in every breath we take, every word we speak, and every action we choose. Let us be grateful—not just for the gifts and joys of this season, but for the miracle of life itself. Each of us is a vessel of love, a unique expression of the divine spark that connects all living things. When we love, we are not just giving; we are becoming love itself, a force that heals, transforms, and unites. So, in this sacred time, let us carry the power of love into every moment. Let it be the thread that weaves through our days, reminding us that we are alive, we are connected, and we are miracles in motion. For love is not something we have; it is something we are. And in that truth lies the greatest gift of all.” Yoshiko Prema Swan #theoceanadvocate #oceanconservation #learnaboutitloveitlookafterit
